Nah it’s a real thing. I never thought about tennis balls specifically, but it has something to do with the small object helping to continuously move/shift the articles in the dryer so they can get a more even dry. Helps prevent stuff like when blankets get all rolled up so the center is still damp.

They sell boxes of dryer balls nowadays. They work great to separate clothes

They fluff up the blanket as it dries. Works on down jackets, too.

Adding tennis balls to my dryer has been weirdly awesome! Everything gets dry when I use them but doesn’t if I don’t, so I throw two tennis balls in the dryer every time now.
