I went through the Lego section and was quite impressed.
I then visited the Hot Wheels aisle when a rogue Korean toddler charged me and slapped my leg for some reason. Fortunately, the child ran away immediately after.

They didn't have any! I wonder if those are a thing of the past. I remember the mechanism that sped up the cars as they passed through it.. God those were cool.

Also still very popular and profitable in Japan, along with Babies R Us.

Believe it or not, they are making a small comeback here in the states. Typically, they will now open in a Macy's and not as an individual retail store. The 500 Macy's stores in the US will also have Toys R Us.
Gosh I miss them and remember when they closed. Glad to see them back!

Is it the same business making a comeback, or a more complex story? Some of the world has Woolworths but they were standalone, often different kinds of business in different countries, Nokia came back via licensing the name.

As far as I'm aware, they are different. Toys R Us was acquired by Tru Kids in 2019 after filing for bankruptcy. As a lot of stores shut down, not every one did. There were a few operational locations and even a few were newly opened (and failed because of COVID).
Then, they agreed to a partnership with Macy's to open in their brick and mortar locations as Macy's will do the fulfillment. Toys R Us is licensed property and not a merchant anymore.

Toys R Us was awesome for LEGO. Great selection, they price-matched Amazon, and you could pick out the exact box you wanted.
Folks on r/Lego complained nonstop about them, but only because they didn't take advantage of the price-matching.

Wellllll I wouldn’t say it’s going STRONG in Canada; more like hanging on by a thread. Stores are closing more and more. The one in my city shut down two years ago :(

My husband works 6 days a week, sometimes 70+ hours a week. He used to love going to Toys R Us on Sunday every once in a while to pick out a Lego like a little kid and build it during the day. It was really sad when the toys r us shut down in our city.

I remember when this was where you would go on a Friday night if you wanted to get in some trouble. Me and my friend had some wild times in our mid 20’s.

In the US they almost completely shut down. They've made a comeback in the last few years with Macy's but are a shadow of what they used to be.
A quick Google search tells me they filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and closed their last two stand alone retail stores in 2021.
