Before it was ever sold in grocery stores, in about 2003... I bought a pack of 100 slices of precooked bacon from Omaha Steaks to take to a beach vacation week with the family.
It was very popular for beach breakfasts and BLTs.

Thatβs a good merchandizing idea, but itβs not recommended to refrigerate tomatoes, and lettuce doesnβt last out of refrigeration, so this configuration is probably the best bet

colin_powers t1_ixxnvdw wrote
It is indeed. It's shelf stable until the plastic bag the bacon is in is opened. You can heat a couple of strips up for a few seconds in the microwave and you have instant bacon.
graceful_london t1_ixxqe8j wrote
It's pretty good too, and sometimes cheaper than buying fresh bacon.
Less people buy the cooked bacon vs the fresh, so the cooked goes on sale more often and steeper to clear stock.
Arokthis t1_ixy9l25 wrote
It may not be cheaper (by weight) at first glance, but it's worth the money between fat loss and saving lots of aggravation.
DenverBowie t1_ixz0i1l wrote

Ok, I get what they're doing here, but coming from food service I feel like this arrangement doesn't take into consideration the cultures that might be hesitant to purchase produce displayed on the same surface as pork (ie Halal).
Maybe I'm being overly considerate since the bacon is packaged separately, but it still always makes me uneasy to see meat on the same surface as veg, especially pork, regardless of whether it's precooked or not
Most likely I'm just being unnecessarily sensitive about something I don't fully understand. But I guess that's what makes me an American.
Banana_Ram_You t1_ixxrxns wrote
Ey you've got the right amount of concern for all of our friends, and understanding that it may seem overboard.
There's a Jewish university nearby, and when a friend there brought me to the cafeteria for the first time, they told me the importance of the colored trays and utensils, and to put them in their respective collection bins. Halal and Kosher are very clear about contamination in a way that many people are not aware of or used to thinking about. Good awareness on ya for sharing that perspective~
alvinofdiaspar t1_ixxryk9 wrote
I doubt it unless the customer is super strict and sensitive about these issues - in which case there are plenty of ethnic groceries stores that cater to their needs. In fact here in Ontario some of these ethnic community supermarkets are actually owned by the mainstream chains.
graceful_london t1_ixxqpne wrote
It's probably fine since it's sealed separately, but packs can bust open or leak on the shelf, or customers will open packs and leave them on the shelf. In the retail environments I've worked in, there are plexiglass or plastic dividers between different animal/plant products to prevent broken packs from being a problem.

Basically the grocery stores started arranging shit like this for people to get their groceries based on their habits. It's called "lifestyle shopping" or something like that. It's supposed to be more modern and personalized but in practice it turns into a seemingly random mess.
It's because of stupid Trader Joes and Whole Foods and how they arrange stuff. Now every normal grocery store does it and it's fucking frustrating. They will literally separate everything so you find 1 brand of something on one end of the store but have to look all over for where they put another similar brand or type because it's been put on the shelf with other items that their data tells them are bought together.
Just like how your YouTube or Netflix algorithm is often pretty wrong about suggesting what you actually want to watch, leading to you having to dig through bad recommendations, whatever metrics the stores use lead to some really stupid and random things being put together. One store near me had olive oil in 4 different sections, all different types, some with the cheese, some in the bread aisle, some near produce and lastly some in the FUCKING COOKING OIL SECTION WHERE OLIVE OIL GOES.
A person looking for that type of bacon is going to look in the fucking bacon section and not fucking see it and assume they don't have it because they aren't buying produce that day and aren't going to notice this stupid "convenient" display.
