Pushing a bike blows. Don't make that your Plan A.

In MA you can get a motorcycle permit from the RMV without having to take a road test, just a 30 question exam. (Delightfully, a shockingly huge proportion of bikers just keep renewing their permits instead of getting a proper motorcycle license endorsement, specifically to avoid having to take a road test and prove to everyone that all they know how to do is go fast in a straight line.) I think you can get the permit online, it's like 30 bucks. Do that and get legal before you get a bike. Alternatively, rent a bike trailer from U-Haul (assuming you have a vehicle that can pull it.)

And take the MSF course. It won't get you ready for the street, but it will teach you the fundamentals of how to handle a bike at parking lot speeds. I realize that sounds flippant, but it isn't. In this country you can, theoretically, pass the motorcycle license exam with no training whatsoever, which is friggin' terrifying.
