New York and New England are also geographically-divided, by the Berkshire Mountains and the Taconic Mountains, both of which are part of the Appalachians, which means the mountains are primarily oriented north-south and have only a few valleys joining the different ridges, which makes travel difficult. My guess is the Hudson River valley historically was a pretty substantial geographical barrier. It pretty much follows the Western edge of New England.

Early on (pre revolution), Connecticut extended to the Hudson. There was some treaty that brought the line east to where it is now.
