Not just you. I only needed three decent sized russets the other night for dinner. All they had were sweet potatoes. Which I have no issue with. But I wanted russets. I bought a three lb bag of them. And none of them were a decent size! I had to bake 6 freaking potatoes to feed three people! This summer, in addition to my laying hens. I am planning on growing potatoes, garlic and some other veggies. Even if I do have to move the garden space to where there's more sunlight

Why not go to one of the farms directly. Not sure where you live but there are even some close to Boston.

Those weren't 1/4 sized apples. Those were just husky cranberries.

Do you have a BJ's membership? I found good Russets there. $6.89 for a 10lb bag. As other commenters mentioned, there's a potato shortage.

Apples were effected by the drought - they didn't really rot, but with less water, they didn't grow as large.

Potatoes - don't shop on Sunday afternoon with everyone else.

Except for BJs, all the produce in my locals has been shit of late.

Honestly we have 3 grocery stores within like 2 miles. Stop and shop is constantly out of like broccoli and green beans, Shaws has half rotten produce on the shelves, market basket is the only one fully stocked, but it’s so much of a shitshow to even walk in there that it’s barely worth going.

Damn. Potatoes are fine down here in FL. Maybe a side gig shipping taters up north?

Hadley or Hatfield, but only in season.

Hail solanine!

AFAIK if you want them to keep you have to store them somewhere dark; a closet or basement or the proverbial "root cellar"

A local farmers market? Potatoes are one thing you can often find outside of growing season.

Pricerite, have had a lot of luck with the produce there. I will say though- I typically shop every few days so food doesn't sit long enough to go bad. I've heard other people say that their produce goes bad quickly which is why it's discounted- I've not had that problem.

Get used to shortages like this. We'll be seeing them more frequently as the climate shifts.

If you plan on garlic for this summer, you are too late. It needs to be planted in the fall for harvest this coming summer. At least that's what I was told. I planted my first bunch last October.

I'm in central Mass and am surprised to hear people say there is a potato shortage. All of the super markets I frequent have plenty of all kinds of potatoes and the prices have been lower than I've seen them in a while.

They are just about the only thing in the grocery store that is down in price.
