Folding knives, Swiss army knives. No doubled-edged, no daggers, no switchblades.

Switch blade types and double edge knives are arrestable so be aware.

Pretty sure the max is a 3 inch single edged blade. I personally have been told that 3 inches is more than enough. So you should feel plenty safe with your average Swiss Army knife

Self-defense is frowned upon in MA. Having said that, I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6

You can carry a standard folding knife, and I do from time to time, mostly for utility purposes. That said, I will always pass on the advice I got once in a martial arts class. If you’re going to carry a knife, you better be prepared to use it (and end a human life as a result) and you better know how to use it, because otherwise you might have it taken away from you, and then your assailant has a knife.

Unless youre being attacked by deli meats and cheeses. There are better ways to protect yourself. A concealed carry license and firearms safety class is realistically your best bet

As soon as you defend yourself and the cops show up everything becomes illegal in this state, technically. On all parties potentially, I think it's discretionary. That's just me understanding after some light research here and there. Hell, slingshots are straight up illegal here. I ain't a lawyer though.

there was a case where cops sent a carpenter to jail for years because he had tools on him and they coached some people in a road rage situation to write their complaint so as to send him to jail; another case, Boston cops conspired with a Latin dude at a car repair shop where the police cruiser got serviced to raid his victim's home and find a knife in his safe, ended up having to go to court, when really the Latin dude was the one who bullied and attacked him at work.

our family friend stopped to do first aid to a child and ended up in jail without bail deemed dangerous to society by a judge.. the kids' mom started yelling accusations and off he went for weeks and got his life destroyed almost. the lawyers said if you touch someone, you are automatically guilty.

As a knife nerd this is my least favorite question as it tends to be asked by dipshits that think a knife is going to help them take on 4 guys john wick style in a fight( its not they are gonna take it and stab you to death for trying) i use folding knifes as they were intended. As a tool. I open boxes, cut ropes and ties at work, ect. A knife isnt going to do you any good in a fight especially if you are not trained in kali or something similar and judging by you not knowing the laws its pretty clear that you havent been trained. So TLDR a pocket knife is the worst form or protection i can think of and if you are really that scared to walk at night either dont, or bring a bat so then at least you’ll have range

Carry pepper spray if you are concerned about being attacked. Probably much more effective than you fumbling to unfold a pocket knife which then has to be used very close to your attacker.
