I'm going be eating lettuce and pasta for the rest of my days on earth...
Ok pasta and water...
Two birds one stone. Just drink the starchy pasta water for an added filler for your meal.
Pasta is shit food isn’t even good for you
the restaurant i work for is currently paying $96 for a case of lettuce (about 20-24 heads)
They should talk with the owner of Maria’s in Scituate. They’ve been vehemently anti-lettuce since the 1970s because of price fluctuations.
I’m on an all pasta diet. I’m gonna drop dead soon but at least my groceries were two fifty
Its been a lot of beans for me
I thought it was just me because people really don’t talk about it. It’s freaking traumatic to go grocery shopping. I was in the store over the weekend and I just happen to notice that a bag of Fritos is $5.19. A bag of Fritos. Note that I did not buy a bag of Fritos it just caught my eye, I’m too poor to afford such luxuries!
Aldi sells off-brand Fritos for like $1.50.

I'm scared of what's in a 12-cent hot dog.

Speaking of...
I've recently discovered boneless pork butts, $1 a pound, makes an excellent pot roast.
Crock pot, onion slices in the bottom, can of Pepsi, slab of meat, envelope of pork gravy mix on top. Time.

Market Basket. They have a pretty good selection of weird cuts of meat.
Pepsi has the corn syrup that you'd get in a bbq sauce. The carbonation tears into the meat and tenderizes it. Root beer is a variation, but I tried that and it was awful. Smelled like chemical waste.

Jeez I’m without car so my only option is S&S and it’s BRUTAL
Gas prices went back down, egg prices staying up.
Just saw gas at $4 in Northborough so idk wtf is going on
That’s Northborough for you though. Their gas is always 10-30 cents per gallon more expensive than the surrounding towns. The only exception to that being the BJ’s.
I live in Westboro and saw $4.05 this morning. BJ's is the place to get gas in the area I saves 35 cents a gallon the other day by going there.
There's this gas station right on the border of Somerville/Cambridge/Medford by Tufts...they're straight gouging because of location. I think it was like $4.70s yesterday. Went in for cigs, brought it up and the dude laughed smh
Election is over.
The Saudis/Qatar decided to f@ck us because they want Republican rule.
It’s time for Biden to tap into the national egg reserve.
Going to start releasing 1,000,000 cartons a day
why won't Biden do anything about EggPEC?
Dunno where you are but gas prices have not gone down.
Framingham was close to or over $4 the other day, saw prices at $3.60 today.
I live on the southcoast and gas prices have only gone up. In August I got gas for $2.97/gal. Now we're back up to $3.69/gal.
Yup same. Live on the south coast and my gas guzzling POS makes me want to buy a bicycle every time I have to fill up. These prices are killing me.
There was a magical time over the summer where it consistently kept going down... Stabilized at $3.10-$3.20 for a while. I think it was the first football Sunday, it finally went down to $2.97. Literally the next day back up to $3.25 and increasing ever since.
Filling up sucks but it's still grocery shopping that makes me die inside. Even in its peak a watermelon was $7-$9 this summer.
This is not down. Our prices do not match the lowered cost by any means. Profit margin stayed wayyyy up
Gas is $2 a gallon??? Where????
Over the last year, we've been dealing with avian flu - it's highly infectious and chickens drop from it within 24 hours so it's hard to catch before it's spread through the flock. With bird migration happening again, it's spreading badly in some areas, like it did in coastal MA during the spring
Its led to an egg shortage, as well as chicken and turkey so they've all gone up
Wait, wait.
Which came first, the chicken shortage or the egg shortage?
In this case the chicken shortage
This is the answer. A friend predicted this months ago as millions of birds had to be quelled due to avian flu.
Here is the aphis site that keeps track across the country. Currently 620 flocks affected.
Chicken I thought was coming down....
[deleted]
That plus the cage free law in MA
That’s a load of shit. The grocery stores are gouging us
well that too, but he aint wrong
We could all use an egg in these trying times.
I’ve been poisoned by my constituents!
I’ve come down with a little bit of consumption !
I believe you have “a touch” of consumption
You’re right

Definitely glad we started raising chickens a few years ago, outside of the initial cost and labor of setting up a coop it's really easy and feed prices seem to be steadier than human food prices.
Same thing. Got 6 chickens. Good eggs, plus a fun hobby. They're surprisingly intelligent and curious.
Yeah it was my wife's idea, but I've grown to love them. Now that we have a huge run set up it's like clockwork, definitely was some work raising them from chicks and building everything, but I had fun with it.
It's hard to kill & eat them after you know them, and they must take some preparation that people aren't used to these days - plucking, etc. I guess if you're up for it that's great.
Most people I know keep them for the eggs, not meat. They’re like pets.
How many? been thinking about it.. I have a hydroponic garden....chickens and I'm done ;)
We started with 6, unfortunately one got snatched by a hawk but we still have 5 going strong close to 2 years later. Raising chicks requires a lot more attention than maintaining chickens and obviously building a coop/run took time and money but now that we're set up it's very easy and they're pretty cool to hang out with.
Where are you buying feed? When we started probably 4 years ago or so a 50lb bag of feed from Tractor Supply was like $12 now its closer to $20. Oh and on top of that I have 2 chickens that eat eggs. So I am lucky to get 1 egg a day out of 9 chickens. Once it gets a little colder it will be 0 until Spring.
Oof sorry to hear about all of that, we started in spring 2021 and feed has gone from 16-18 in that span, which compared to other inflation I've seen isn't too bad. We always buy it at a local place nearby called Westfield feed, if you're in the area there's also one called Easthampton feed owned by the same folks. Luckily we haven't had any issues with them eating their eggs and we're still getting at least 3 a day out of 5 birds although that will go down to 2-1 in the dead of the winter.
We got 6 chickens this year. It's been super fun and we have more eggs than we know what to do with. (Caveat, we'd need to sell each egg for $50 to recoup what we spent on their coop and run. Lol)
Haha I agree. When we got our first 6 we bought a cheap coop from tractor supply. That lasted about 3 months until they outgrew it and ended up spending like $1300 on a coop and run. Its been a few years and we are now up to 9 chickens and probably could fit a couple more before it was an issue.
I want more - but we're limited to 6 by our city. Shameless plug, we've been sharing about raising our chickens on our site https://www.meatycluckers.com/ (and we have a 24/7 live stream of them...lol)
Our town has limits based on lot size. I think 1/4 acre has a 6 chicken limit. We have a couple acres so we don't have a limit. We are thinking about doing some meat birds next year.
You can get 5 Dozen at BJ's for $21.99 or 24 cage free for $7.49
I thought all eggs in MA had to be cage free....
Cage free is honestly meaningless… just fyi. Pasture raised is best if you’re trying to get ethical eggs.
Double checked..the 5 dozen are cage free generic brand... the 24 are cage free "egglands best"
They are. Which is assisting with the cost increase
"Why r eggs so expensive"
God forbid you have to pay a little more so an animal can suffer a little less.
I remember when you could get a dozen at MB for $0.99. 2 years ago was a nice time
I remember when gas was $0.70/gallon.
Ain't that the truth 😏
Yes - the Faberge stores does run expensive.
I think you mean DOTH instead of does...
[deleted]
Doh. Stupid fat brain. I'm gonna let it stand. :)
I am hearing anecdotal talk about supermarkets raising prices because of “inflation” but keeping their supplier prices down and capturing additional profits, similar to other corporations making record profits from inflation. At the end of the day, they can raise the price until people stop buying and even then, can keep it high and sell less volume and keep profits high. If expectations are that supply might shrink from reduced grain exports/avian flu, they may be front running the actual drop off in supply.
This is most definitely happening across the board (not just food) – I see it everyday as part of my job. Prices went up, people still bought even at those much higher prices (can’t always blame people, when you need essentials, you need essentials). Companies also raised their prices higher than needed to combat inflation understanding that consumers wouldn’t know that part of the hike was greed – it was an opportunity and they took it. Now as the actual causes of inflation have abated (perhaps not fully, but it’s better), companies think consumers have accepted the new price so they’re here to stay. The only way to fight back is to not buy things you don’t have to. Vote with your wallet as they say.
[deleted]
Some farmer made a video explaining this, the supermarkets are fucking them over proper which is why there’s an “egg shortage”
Also an avian flu affecting mostly egg laying hens
Wish it was just eggs…everything jumping up in price. There may be an explanation for a few products going up but the majority is just price gouging under the guise of inflation.
which causes inflation
It’s eggregious
Eggstreme eggspansion
Corporations used "supply-chain" and "cost increases" to drive up their prices. Those issues have largely bee solved but not one of these companies has any intention of lowering prices, it's a money grab.
Avian Flu outbreak has been going on for months. Poultry supply in general has been way down and will be for the foreseeable future.
Didn’t we pass laws giving chicken more space and a law went into effect this year impacting importing eggs?
> Didn’t we pass laws giving chicken more space and a law went into effect this year impacting importing eggs?
I shop in Mass which did pass the "cage free egg" law and in NH which did not pass the "cage free law" and I don't notice much of a difference in prices.
At least in my area, the local Market Basket went from 99 cents per dozen to $3.99 per dozen as soon as the new law kicked in.
Well the law went into effect at about the same time as the covid shortages started. Everything went up in price.
Why did the price go up just as much over the border in NH at the same time?
It’s almost like the stores buy the eggs from the same farms.
Avian flu, and the cost of feed is wild. My chickens are costing me A LOT more than they used to, and I’ve had to mark up egg prices because I’m not about to sell them at a loss
Massachusetts passed a law a few years ago, that recently came into effect, that all eggs (and egg whites) have to be from cage-free producers.
The vast majority of other states do not have these requirements, and thus producers do not shift their production methods to sell eggs in MA. We are just way way too small of a market to do so.
This, combined with avian flu, drastically reduced the available egg supply under MA law and prices have gone up as a result.

I live near the NH border and do my grocery shopping on both sides or the boarder. I am seeing no difference in the Mass price and the NH price.
Nah it wasn't cage free. It defined how much space each chicken had to have but they are far from cage free. The bill was also modified after the fact to be in line with other states regulations. It may have had a modest 10% price impact but nothing close to what we are seeing now.
Bird flu
How high do food prices have to go before we have rioting in the streets?
I think that people in communities should start farming.....
💯
The cost of food is about to skyrocket. The war in Ukraine has diminished the exports of 20% of the world’s grain.
Wait till the price of meat hits—the animals that are just about to be ready for slaughter, are the first wave of livestock that was born after the demand skyrocketed. It’s going to be pretty shocking for a bit.
Truth: i’ve started eating potatoes as a meal substitute.
As an Irish citizen, there is nothing about this comment that I don’t love and support.
Bro a head of cauliflower is now $8
I get 12 pasture raised from stop and shop for $7.59. It’s criminal. Idk why I even care about pasture raised but alas I do
So far Eggland’s Best have been cheaper than the store brand for us. Seems like supply chain problems with private label egg suppliers.
Couldn't pick a better time for me to go vegan
I recommend shopping around a little. For a while Target had my favorite eggs for $1.50 less than Stop & Shop (they went up a couple weeks ago). Now theres a local grocer that has the same eggs $1 cheaper than S&S. I eat a shit ton of eggs so it makes a difference for me.
If you’re outside of a city, local farm stand eggs don’t seem to have increased so they’re actually the bargain now. My wife has started taking a back road home from work every few days to hit a roadside stand.
My brother has a few hens…fresh eggs every day
The chickens are on a strike again…those cluckers
It’s true!! February 20, 2020 I bought 36 eggs at wegmans for $5.49. (I took a picture because I knew it would be memory worthy)
The chickens have had enough. They want their payday.
Seriously. I found a cheap dozen at Trader Joes though.
[deleted]
I forget when not long ago maybe a year I was buying the box of 60 for under 5. Yeah the regular kind but still. Wish I had chickens.
There have have been some serious fires at egg farms killing hundreds of thousands of egg laying chickens.
It’s because we passed that humane chicken law,
Which store?
MB has been pretty good. Big Y SUCKS
Shaws....
At this point - 30-40 minutes drive to Market Basket is worth it.
I can not believe the difference in prices. Lots of stuff is literally half price compared to other stores. If not, so many things a dollar or more less. It adds up fast!
”Moah fa ya dolla! Mahket Baskit!”
Yeah....this is your mistake. Everything at Shaws is wicked expensive. If you want a good egg deal, go to trader Joe's ($2.99 for 12) or wegmans (2× 18packs for $11).
FYI also to all those doing Thanksgiving grocery runs: just saw at TJs that 3 herb packs (sage, thyme, rosemary bunches) is $2.99 (compared to $2 for each herb at most other places). Pomegranates for $2.99 each. Whole Butternut squash $2.99 each no matter the size. They also are selling heritage farm turkeys and Kosher turkeys, if that's your jam. Other jems I saw were whole roasted and peeled chestnuts, cedar&balsam candles, portobello mushroom consensed soup, vegan brioche bread for stuffing, and "Thanksgiving stuffing" rice.
I noticed that last night, paid almost $8.00 for Nellies 18 pack of large brown eggs. Thought it was just me not paying attention to prices.
its expected to continue rising i work for a catering company in the western part and even for one unit (36 eggs) were paying $11.12 wholesale, bird flu and other things are said to be the problem but its also just genuine inflation
Wegmans still 10 for 36. Was $2 for 36 three years ago
I’m paying $5.99 for 12…
$2.29 / dozen at my nearest Hannaford. $2.99 / 18.
If it's in shortage and expensive where you are, buy less. Buy seasonal / on sale first.
Now that midterms are over prices are going to get wild. Buckle up folks it’s going to be a cold winter.
i mean this is a little dramatic.
Chickens are on strike. Tough labor market out there.
They're eggsane
Her?
Very obvious republicans and trump are doing this to the democrats of Massachusetts

And if you google it, they’ll try to tell you eggs are 3 bucks in the USA right now 😂 🇺🇸
Chickens are unionizing
Look at the value of the dollar lately. Taking a real beating. Marketwatch US Dollar Index
Try finding a local person that sells eggs. We used to sell for $3 but had to recently raise to $4 due to feed prices skyrocketing. Our girls free range mostly but at this time of year they rely on feed more. We used to pay $12/50lb but now pay $17 from a local feed place. At the store bags are going for over $20 now. It’s crazy.
I just paid $4.59 for a dozen jumbo white at Market Basket. I think a large dozen was around $3.59.
The hens are on strike
Inflation and poor public policies
Seems peta didn’t like the way chickens were treated and filed a lawsuit to increase chickens living space - making costs raise
Didn’t MA vote to make eggs more expensive?
I've considered raising my own chickens, it might be cheaper than buying eggs over time.
Wait til you go buy a turkey...
Maybe that cage-free egg mandate wasn't such a good idea after all.
The Great Reset. You will own nothing and be happy.
I remember I bought a 24 pack of eggs on sale at Market 32 (Price Chopper) maybe 6 months ago for like 3 bucks or maybe less. Now it's what like $7 for a dozen of the cheap brand?

Happy cake day!
