I am hearing anecdotal talk about supermarkets raising prices because of “inflation” but keeping their supplier prices down and capturing additional profits, similar to other corporations making record profits from inflation. At the end of the day, they can raise the price until people stop buying and even then, can keep it high and sell less volume and keep profits high. If expectations are that supply might shrink from reduced grain exports/avian flu, they may be front running the actual drop off in supply.

This is most definitely happening across the board (not just food) – I see it everyday as part of my job. Prices went up, people still bought even at those much higher prices (can’t always blame people, when you need essentials, you need essentials). Companies also raised their prices higher than needed to combat inflation understanding that consumers wouldn’t know that part of the hike was greed – it was an opportunity and they took it. Now as the actual causes of inflation have abated (perhaps not fully, but it’s better), companies think consumers have accepted the new price so they’re here to stay. The only way to fight back is to not buy things you don’t have to. Vote with your wallet as they say.
