They were on card stock and I believe pink. I think they might have used an 80 column punch card to create the license, then after the information was typed on it, they detached the rightmost third and that was your license, they rest of the card was the registry’s file information.

I remember they were fairly easily alterable

Also, your Social Security number used to be you license number.

Oh wow! I remember them making a big deal about having an S number when I first got my license, so I always figured it was some antiquated shit they took forever to get around to fixing. Makes it even worse that they switched into using SS numbers.

You could contact the Mass DMV and ask. It’s not like it’s top secret info. Indeed, there are even laws requiring govt agencies to respond to reasonable requests for info (FOIA, etc).

Having had to get info from various govt agencies before, you’ll be surprised how often specific agencies have someone who is even excited to help.
