For longer temporary disabilities like after an orthopedic surgery and also the case for chronic illnesses like multiple sclerosis...how can you protect yourself?

Either short or long term disability. That’s what it’s for.

Everywhere I’ve worked provides term disability insurance. Unlimited PTO has gotten pretty common as well.
