Hello! We're visiting Boston on our honeymoon and intended to take the train to Salem for Halloween, but a few people have suggested going on Halloween itself isn't a great idea 😂 I was wondering, are we better off visiting on Halloween itself or the day after? Thank you guys!

My understanding is that Salem on Halloween is pretty crazy. If you want to visit a historic place and learn the real story behind the witch trials I suggest checking out the Rebecca Nurse Homestead in Danvers. You can watch a presentation about the witch trials and tour her Homestead. She was in her 70s when she was executed for witchcraft and her story was the basis of the Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. You can tour the family graveyard on the property. It’s real history and is very respectful of the people who were caught up in the witch trials. I am a direct descendent of Rebecca Nurse.

Unless you’re really into the lore you’re better off with day after. Salem on Halloween is a mad house, you can barely move there are so many people, if you don’t yet have a reservation to a restaurant you won’t eat and the train from Boston is literally standing room only.

Salem is a wonderful place to visit especially if you are into history. Salem during Halloween should be avoided like the plague. It’s crowded, traffic is horrendous, any sites you may want to visit are going to have lines around the block. Restaurants are jammed with incredible wait times. Salem is a great place but not at Halloween.

The city will be absolutely mobbed on Halloween. Don't expect to be seated at any restaurant or being able to breath for that matter. If that sounds your speed still, go for it. I'd take the commuter rail though. A great option for dinner nearby would be checking out Beverly!

If you want more quiet New England vibes, definitely go after October; personally depending on what it is you're looking for, I'd recommend Newburyport.
