So Mass Save came today to quote an install for a five zone mini split system as well as to upgrade the service to 200A to take my units(in a multi family) 60A panel to 100A. There are two units in the house but on the first floor is still on oil so this whole project will be just for that unit. It came up to about $20ish-k after the 10k rebate which I’m contemplating but definitely doing my research about. Are the ways to minimize costs with Mass Save? Does Mass Save have to be the ones to do it? Can I purchase the units for them to install? I’m looking to get the project done utilizing the 0% loan and 10k rebate.

Edit: I got the energy assessment done already and they insulated the whole house this summer

Hi, so

  1. Make sure you get a home energy assessment before minsplits. This is required for the whole home $10k rebate and you have to us install any weatherizing opportunity they identify. heat pump rebate page as a multi fam bldg you may pay nothing for weatherization but it depends on a few other factors.

  2. Mass Save is just the program they are not a contractor. Not sure who came to your house but they are likely a Mass Save partnering contractor. You can use any hvac contractor that’s signed up with the program find a contractor

  3. The $10k rebate is for installing heat pump load enough to replace your heat system. whole home verification form

  4. You can include some of the cost of the panel upgrade in your loan heat loan page also once you choose a quote from a contractor you apply for the heat loan. They’ll subtract the eligible rebate amount from your authorized letter application. You’ll pay the $10k up front then apply for the money back after

Other than the loan and rebates not sure there’s anything else through the program to help but make sure to look into the Inflation Reduction Act incentives to. Doubt you can purchase the units for them to install. Have to work that with your contractor probably.

Yes I had the assessment done and whole house insulated this summer. He gave me a card with Mass save representation on it so I just assumed. Good to know. I will call some people on that list and get quotes from them. Thanks!

Ask about their plans with the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act. They will have point of sale rebates of up to $8k and I believe a $2k tax credit for heat pumps starting in 2023. It’s up to each state to determine exact implementation. It might be worth waiting, or the current program may be pretty solid.

Sounds a little cheap? I paid 2 years ago $25k for six heads and opted for the top of the line units on the Mitsubishi hyper heat system. Get some quotes from Mitsubishi diamond elite installer.

I looked at the contract they left with me today and they were for Gree units. I will definitely be calling some people off the authorized installers list this week. This quote is active for 30 days

Looks like the program suggests getting 3 quotes. I’ve different contractors can have wildly different quotes. The Important thing is to make sure the heat pump is cold weather rated, otherwise the unit will not perform as efficiently in the winter.
