you need the title and proof you paid sales tax on the car,so bill of sale including the tax on the sale would work.If the car is gifted, you would need proof of the gift.I don't know all the laws on gift tax so having it sold for a $1 is a common good idea plus the 6 cents tax on the $1
You turn in to them the out of state title and you get mailed a MA Title.
You fill out a form and you get plates and a sticker and you are all set.Title and bill of sale/proof of gift and you're all set!
Yes make an appointment but no .no one else needs to be with you,the Title is your proof of ownership ,because they will run the the VIN on the title and if it's stolen they will know.

Just asking for clarification regarding the title - what does that mean? since the current title is in my family member's name. wouldn't the RMV change the title to my name. I found this form for change of title and registration: https://www.mass.gov/doc/registration-and-title-application-0/download

The back of the title has the places to sign ,that is where your parents or family would sign it over to you ,then you sign ,then the car is your at that point
Yes when you get the MA title in the mail it will have your name only then ,and your place to sign it to a new person at a latter time. Just have to title with proof of sales tax or proof of gift and your good to go
