I think all issued licenses are Real IDs now but I could be wrong

You can renew it/upgrade to the real ID six months before your current one expires.

You have to go in person (or to AAA if you are a member) bc you have to provide documentation. There is an application you can fill out online and print out to bring to the appt. It will tell you what documents you need to bring.

I'd get real ID ,I believe you need a Birth certificate ,SS card, your old picture ID/DL and two pieces of mail with your current address not more than 60 days old.A passport could also substitute as well for additional ID

It’s really easy, you fill out an application for a real ID online then head to RMV (I went to AAA) with your documents up to year before your license expires and they will send you a real ID. There are more documents required than if you want to renew and get a regular license but it’s the same RMV appointment type and the same cost. Downside is you need to renew in person if you want a real ID.

I don't know about now. I did it two years ago and it had to be within six months of the expiration. But I wanted the renewal also.

I think you might be able to go and get a new one issued but would still have to renew it in 2024....but don't quote me on that.

Dunno if you realized or not but the plane restriction thing did get pushed back to like 2025 so you don’t really need to do it just yet

You cannot get on a plane without a Real ID if you don't have a passport. You wouldn't ordinarily use a passport on a domestic flight but you need one or the other.

Just get it out of the way. If you live here you will need to get it done eventually. Make an appointment or use AAA they can help you too. Get the documents and do it. It takes 10 min

My last time around I did not choose the real ID simply because I have a passport, was eligible to renew my license online, and it only took 8 minutes online to renew & pay for my driver's license. Next time I am required to take a new photo then I will bring in all the extra paperwork to make it a Real ID.

Why not just wait until you're due for renewal next year? You won't need a Real ID before your current ID expires in 2024, the date got pushed back (again) until 2025. I got a Real ID in 2020 and I'm going to end up renewing it before I ever need it.

The need for a real ID doesn't vary by airline. The TSA is the only one who looks at your ID at the airport and the date that Real ID enforcement goes into effect is 5/7/2025. It was supposed to be this year but got pushed back.
