Athol,Orange,North Adams you get get your own apartment for a 1K or less.
I don't know E.Mass well but for roomates Northamton is collegie and they are always roomate postings if you don't mind stoned college students.
Back in the 1980s, we used these classified magazines. They cost about a buck and came out every week or two. It was like Craigslist, paper version. I found roommates by word of mouth but that was in Boston and Metrowest.

Facebook pages for individual towns are really helpful places to post

I’m in the Merrimack Valley. Posted for my spare bedroom in my condo, had two calls in a few hours and one of those callers took it the next day! Mostly families out here. The Lowell area has students looking for roommates, but you’re probably going to get party central.

Craigslist. There seems to be people looking for other students in the Lowell area, but Burlington gets a lot of professionals looking for roommates working white collar.
Do you belong to any particular denomination? If so does the denomination have a particular parish/temple that has a good young adult group? IF so I would look to there!
I’m homeless with an 18.50 an hour job and cannot find a room/roommate anywhere. I work in the Burlington area. I’m on the verge of quitting my job and relocating somewhere else because I can’t live my life.
I don’t bother with Facebook anymore, most of the time people are spotty with replies. Craigslist is hit or miss.

I usually start by dating them. There are a few websites for that. Sorry. That's all I've got. Do Redfin or Zillow have forums or something? That might be worth a shot.
