Hi, I’m moving back to MA in June to take care of my very elderly parents. I will be looking for work once I get there but I assume I’ll have to buy insurance myself while I look for work. I think I apply through the MA health connector website…..or should I do MassHealth since I’ll be unemployed? Does anyone have any advice in general about getting health insurance while unemployed? I’ve always had health insurance from my work (which I hope will continue once I get a job).

Go to the connector website, do the application with your income that you have earned this year or will earn (known things like investments, unemployment, separation agreement, etc), the site will tell you what you qualify for.

Even if I’ll be earning nothing when I need the insurance?

It's based on the year, so if you earned money in January you'll put that in. You can also put in that you have no income that current month if that's the case

So they are completely different departments?

It's all one application. But yes, they are separate entities. Masshealth is Medicaid and the Health Connector is the Marketplace for private insurance plans.

Mass health best bet but they suck. And it don’t matter what health insurance provider you go for it will automatically redirect you to mass health. So like say if you want blue cross it will redirect you to blue cross blue shield mass health. So it be mass health anyway

What area of MA will you be moving to and what kind of work are you looking for?

North shore and I just need some job I can do in the evening that hopefully offers health insurance. The pay doesn’t really matter. I was going to start looking at front desk jobs at health clubs.

If you end up only part time, you’ll likely still qualify for Masshealth or a connector plan. Masshealth is better than most employer offered plans.
And low income on a connector plan can cost as low as $40/month
