At the end of last year it was already ridiculous. They kept adding members even though during peak times it was unreasonably busy. Now with New Year resolutions, you can’t find 3 feet of space to have a comfortable workout in the mornings or evenings. On the weekends, they have severely reduced hours, so all day long it’s packed. You’d think they’d at least extend those with the apparently booming business.

Stay away. It’s not worth it.

I joined just before Thanksgiving and yeah it’s busier but it’s not totally unmanageable. It’s otherwise a pretty good club for the price so I’d still recommend it especially if it’s the closest gym available. These crowds will die down in a few weeks.

Just give it 2 weeks and the New Year’s resolutioners will be gone

pretty sure the building they’re in offers discounted membership to its residents, which doesn’t help.

But opening up more gyms is unreasonable to some

Typical new year rush. It dies down towards the end of the month. Picks up in February when people are reminded they’re charged monthly then by president’s day it’s back to manageable.

I've tried mornings between 7-9, evenings between 5-7, and late afternoon last weekend. All horrible experiences. This evening when I went there literally wasn't a single locker available in the locker room and there was still a steady stream of bodies coming in.

5-7 am is great. If you’re going peak hours, expect peak activity

In February it will be back to normal. This is true for every gym in the country during New Year’s.

People who live in the Columbus apartments (90 Columbus, 50 Columbus etc) get free membership to that gym I believe. So yeah… I’m not surprised lol

Was a member q3, q4 of 2021 and Q1 q2 of 2022 and I eventually left for the reason that it felt too busy/crowded and couldn't get an efficient workout in.

Edit: otherwise I had no problems there and felt that staff were kind so if you have the flexibility to go at 5 am or like midday during the week it might be ok for you.

yeah, but it's still the best venue in town to hook up with closeted gay men. :)

Somewhat understandably weekday peak hours have been unbearable since I joined a couple years ago. However, even on the weekends there’s no good times to go, packed all day. It’s frustrating seeing them taking potential new customers for tours when it’s already filled to the brim. Also, the gym is poorly managed, staff is poorly trained and they always have leaks in the ceiling and pipes burst so it’s constantly humid in there. Really wish another gym opened up somewhere in the vicinity.

Listen, as a person who has been exercising for a long time.

It's going to be packed this month. Every year during January, people sign up and overcrowd the gym as part of their new year resolution. Majority will stop going before February and everything will go back to normal.

It is what it is.

$170 a month now, month to month. Lol what. It’s crazy. And I figured if they were open 5a-11p, it would be great. It closes so early. Idk…it’s lame. But damn is it a good gym.

Jersey city has the problem that there has been such a population boom in the downtown area in the last idk 10 years but amenities have not really kept up. Like there isn’t enough gyms of the base caliber available to service all the new residents. New Building have decent gyms, but it doesn’t compare to having a full gym. And for the price you pay to live in downtown, it just doesn’t feel like good value.

Downtown could use a cheap P-Fits aka Planet Fitness. Can’t beat $10/month.

This is exactly why we need another big gym in DTJC. I was there this evening, absolutely insane. Just going to shameless plug this.

Haha sounds like Base should have taken the Equinox approach. If you’re going to pay a premium, you expect a premium product. Not just equipment and amenities, but also the idea that they won’t pack the gym with members ruining the premium experience.

IMO, high end gyms should have an intake survey. One of those questions should be “what is the typical time you work out?” .. this way they can deny or accept applicants based on volume.

This is why I left Base. Its a waste of money. I used to be a Lifetime member. Base is nowhere near the quality and is not worth the money.

It never used to be this crowded. I let my membership lapse during covid and was thinking about renewing. Thanks for the heads up. How can they get away with charging $145/month? Crazy.

If you go from 5-7pm expect a zoo on weekdays and 10-1pm on weekends. Later or earlier than those hours it’s really not that bad.

Been going through 2yrs and very happy with it, but yea sometimes it can get too busy.

I go there often because there are no other alternatives in the area. That place is filthy and they only have ONE water fountain for the entire gym. Disgusting.
