Any advice on how to get a job that I want with the city of Jersey City? I feel like we have a great city that can be made even greater, but that means getting involved I think. I hope it's not a who-you-know situation, but I guess that's why I'm asking if anyone has specific knowledge on this.

Chin up, it's not always who you know, sometimes it's who's your daddy.

Man, I really hope it’s not all like that. Sigh.

It's 100% like that. In JC, as with the rest of Hudson County, patronage is a way of life, and very much alive and kicking.

First things first: have you ran over any bicyclists recently?

If so, did you make sure to leave the scene of the accident without rendering assistance and without contacting authorities?

If the answer to either question is no, then you might not be fit for public duty in Jersey City.

Last time I was at the community meeting, Fulop said that the city is very short-staffed, which is why they didn’t get to whatever the community wanted. It was a few months ago but I guess you can try to apply. It was a few months ago. He did say that the turn-over of the staff is pretty high, which most likely means they pay peanuts and you’d have to deal with the bunch of us.

Yes, the pay is low but I’m less interested in the pay and more interested in being able to be a part of shaping the city, especially regarding transportation. I feel like joining the fight is the only way to really have an impact.

Please go apply tomorrow. Lie on your resume if you have to. I’ll bring you sandwiches ☺️

I’ve already applied, but suspect it will fall into a black hole. I appreciate the sandwich offer! :)

Ask the director of the department or the supervisor for an informational interview. Don’t push your interest in the job itself unless they bring it up. Ask them good questions about the work they do and why you’re interested in it.

Not everyone who gets a job in government is “connected.” But lots of people everywhere get their jobs because the hiring managers like them.

There's a reason why JC (and NJ as a whole) is consider a very politically corrupt place and often inept at the government level. It's a who you know situation.

You’re not going to get any serious answers from these peoples, depending on what you’re looking to do you can reach out to your local city council person to look for ways to get more involved and there are a bunch of other local organizations

County jobs are better than city ones. More money and better benefits

I can’t figure out why there even IS a county government. Seems like a blatant waste of money, but maybe there is a function I don’t know about.

Would you want to work for the city if there’s no pension involved?

Not concerned about a pension.
