They're putting their lives at risk getting paid $150k/year to ignore traffic violations and crimes committed by their friends, we may as well let them park where they want.
Policing: it's like a real job, only harder.

Watched a drunk port authority cop get whisked away from the scene of an accident he caused near Madeline’s a few months back. I wish I had made a scene.

Redundant.

Call the police for a car blocking a crosswalk
Salt_the_snail_Gail t1_j6i6qm3 wrote
I was once behind a JC cop that was blocking a one way because he parked to go into a bakery to buy a cake. The procession of cars literally waited to watch him go into the bakery, buy the cake, walk out, open his trunk, put the cake in the trunk, then drive off. That was … not the best showing ..

Are police in other countries as arrogant about how they utilize their vehicles or is this a uniquely American problem?
FinalIntern8888 t1_j6iduo1 wrote
I feel like people in other countries don’t use cars as much as we do
TastyCuttlefish t1_j6iomub wrote
Substitute “power” for vehicles and yes, it’s fairly universal. The position itself tends to attract certain personalities, a tendency that has been reinforced by recruiting policies.
SadMaverick t1_j6ixn43 wrote
Oh boi!! We call cops “goons” in India. Relatively, this is nothing. Cops can get away with actual murders by planting evidence. They use their vehicles and drivers for personal errands. That’s okay because the local gas station WILL fill their tanks for free.

Just do like firefighters do in an emergency when there's someone parked directly in front of a hydrant. Smash a window on both sides to get through.

Me, being me, I would get a photo with the license plate and tweet it to Steven FullofShitLop, but that’s the kind of thing that got me blocked.
Ilanaspax t1_j6i712f wrote
That’s their normal spot - you know right by the crosswalk to make it extra unsafe for pedestrians.
SkyeMreddit t1_j6i72oj wrote
Standard operating procedure for police who will then ticket you for crossing outside of the crosswalk

Blecher_onthe_Hudson t1_j6j2diq wrote
Illegally tinted, you're not allowed to tint the windshield or front passenger windows. But as the OP shows, police do whatever they want.
driftingwood2018 t1_j6j98hg wrote
You should see their personal cars
HElGHTS t1_j6kspx1 wrote
Look up vehicular "sunscreening" -- that's the term NJ uses for legal front tints for medical purposes. I don't know if these cops actually do it legally, but they could. Especially if they have a doctor who's willing to play ball and fill out the paperwork regardless of actual medical necessity (which would itself be illegal if untrue).
G_Funk_Error t1_j6iydiw wrote
Dude, that’s like, one of the benefits they mention in the academy brochure.
LightEndedTheNight t1_j6j10zn wrote
What’s the official policy and/or legality of police parking illegally to stop and get food? Are they allowed to do this? Are they violating any laws/policies/procedures or are they just simply allowed to park their vehicles wherever they want, whenever they want?
I know they do this all the time, but I’ve always wondered if they are actually violating any codes by doing so.
HElGHTS t1_j6krymq wrote
The short answer is that it's inconsequential either way. The long answer is that the traffic code actually does carve out a decent number of exemptions, and parking anywhere is probably one of them although it's been a while since I skimmed through -- but they're always with a caveat that it's for reasons related to actual work, so personal errands don't count. Food would be a gray area because it's a necessity more than a luxury in some sense, and theoretically time spent on legal parking would be time that could be spent on actual duties.

A JC cop honked at me because I was stopped in front of the crosswalk at Hamilton Park right outside Chickies/Rumba Cubana - I was stopped because there was A PEDESTRIAN IN THE CROSSWALK. Yet the cop laid on his or her horn for a solid 4 seconds until they realized I was stopped at the crosswalk for a reason (you know, the thing you’re supposed to do as a safe driver). It was absolutely infuriating and I wanted to get out of the car and yell at the cop.
