This seems to have been happening to me recently at JSQ Station a number of times, and not at a specific turnstile. I'd tap my card, see the "Enter" text, start pushing through, then slam right into a locked turnstile. And then in confusion, tap my card again, only to see that my trip got used, leading to a mad rush to get a MetroCard.

Has this been happening to anyone else?

Never had that happen at Grove St, or the various Manhattan PATH stations. Might be JSQ specific? Or you somehow have a bad Smartlink card?

I do keep a pay-per-ride Metrocard on me but it's rare that I use it on PATH. Most recent experience was one time I went to tap my Smartlink Card & it somehow slipped out & flew across the turnstile into the PATH station LOL. Ended up swiping in with the Metrocard that night.

At the moment my experience with this is JSQ exclusive so far, first time it happened was sometime in November, haven't had issues at WTC. At least there I've had bad read spams before I try the next turnstile over and get in.

Might be failing sensors in the turnstile that trigger too early.

Maybe the bar was stuck on the turnstile you used. When a situation like this happens, contact their customer support and you should be reimbursed for the lost trips.

This happened to me multiple times. Usually Grove St, I've tried reaching out to get reimbursed but they weren't helpful at all. I would just jump the turnstile at that point

i am not a lawyer but this is likely correct. it is not illegal to jump over turnstile bars, the legal infraction is entering without paying.

to be clear you'll likely still get a ticket, you'll just need to go to prove your side in court...

i cannot see a transit cop understanding that. all they see is jumper. (this has happened to me about 5x at grove street too)

Understandable. But then in court your guilt has to be proved, and it can't be proved if you paid.

It usually happens if your smartlink card is next to other credit cards, or in your phone wallet case. Just call the smartlink center (number is on the card) and they will take care of the trips.

This happens to me frequesntly at Grove St but I am never charged a trip when it happens. Usually happens the most when my card auto-reloads. Hopefully they stay on track to switch to an Omny style tap and go system for 2023. If not we can expect it when the EWR extension is built
