All I want fof Christmas is direct PATH service from Jersey City to 33rd St. on evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.

And not having to elbow your way into the car during the weekend rush hour. This one not as much on Path as the passengers that prefer to congregate in the entrance area instead of moving further into the train car.

They need to get rid of that dumb weekend schedule…. The Saturday trains I take have been far more crowded than any train I take during the week. It’s also a bit ridiculous to have to wait 10, 20, 40 minutes between trains…

edgargonzalesII t1_j15ui7t wrote

I also don't get the NWK-WTC line on weekends - you will know 100% that the WTC bound train will be "delayed" because it is meant to come before the NWK bound one, and is always magically "delayed" until that train passes and it arrives 2mins later... just coincidence every weekend that it happens

My favorite game is trying to get home from 14th Street and having no clue if the downtown side is the side that is closed or not until you physically walk down the stairs and have to haul ass back across 6th Ave. Schrödinger’s PATH.

rbastid t1_j17tt0c wrote

The PATH always loved to have scheduled "delays," where it may say they run every 30 minutes on say the :00 and :30, but then for 6 hours over night they'll just happened to have a delay of 10 minutes on every train, where 1 train magically disappears every 2 hours.

I guess we have to count our blessings with them, as they actually wanted to completely stop weekend service.....as if no one works on weekends, or may just want to enjoy their free time in the city.

FinalIntern8888 t1_j18yjrv wrote

They wanted to stop weekend service? That’s when it’s the most crowded these days!

2

edgargonzalesII t1_j195wwz wrote

Key problem is it’s like they’re trying to run the service like a for-profit company when it’s a government project (as far as I know) so shouldn’t be run in a “profitable” way

1

FinalIntern8888 t1_j1a4dpw wrote

It’s even worse that it’s an intergovernmental organization, that is answerable to neither NY or NJ in particular, or anyone at all for that matter.

2

jerseyjoe50 t1_j17ap1i wrote

The PATH weekend schedule is a flat out nightmare. Keep packing people into Jersey City, while they keep reducing service. There were more trains a decade ago when less people lived here.

12

FinalIntern8888 t1_j18y2nj wrote

They’ve been doing the reduced schedule since 2006 when it was for 9/11 related repairs. Insane.

9/11 became Sandy became COVID. Amazing how every decade they can come up with a new excuse for shitty service

That hoboken stop is fucked up, they need to cut it out. I was once on a normal jsq to 33rd and inbetween newport they stopped rerouted to hoboken, when they train pulled into hoboken there were like 12 people on the platform, so they inconvience a whole community for 12 people.

Bamaji1 t1_j160fm7 wrote

Hoboken is a major transportation hub. Not getting cut out.

−10

LongDickPeter t1_j163lnn wrote

If its that major then we do not need to divert for them and they should run independent the way it is during rush hour.

Bamaji1 t1_j163qri wrote

Correct. The Port Authority doesn’t do a lot of things we’d like them to.

Itchy-Entrepreneur19 t1_j1753z5 wrote

I personally find it beyond annoying to stop in Hoboken when I probably could swim across the Hudson River to NY quicker. Ok, before the "unwarranted comments" ....I was born in JC, I have a right to voice my opinion. I was born in JC! Happy Holidays

All I want for Christmas is for Jersey City to not have to share trains with Hoboken on weekends.

45

scubastefon t1_j14dsb0 wrote

I mean they could speed it up, as long as everyone is okay with running into a fucking wall under the Hudson River once in a while.

27

CameraCamera35 t1_j14k9aw wrote

Why would the train run into a wall?

4

lynch_95_ t1_j14qtfd wrote

Pay attention to all the turns the trains makes on your next trip. Even a small short curve has speed limits to prevent derailments.

19

RealMaRoFu t1_j14xkuz wrote

Those curves are no joke. Especially when the PATH reaches the New York side of the river: Google Maps shows a beeline from JC to Christopher Street, but in reality, the line first goes to Morton Street (you can actually see the vents if you go there), then it makes a very sharp turn north onto Washington Street, and then another very sharp turn to head east onto Christopher Street. If you want to speed up trains then a full on reconstruction of the tunnel will be needed.

19

FloatingWeight t1_j151q6d wrote

Yet still a better investment than 10b on highway extension

23

Economy-Cupcake808 t1_j179497 wrote

A new tunnel and Hoboken alignment would cost magnitudes more. I don’t it’s feasible.

2

lynch_95_ t1_j14xx2x wrote

Reconstruction is needed regardless. The tunnels mid river are literally disintegrating.

15

pixel_of_moral_decay t1_j17hsbr wrote

It's not just curve, it's also a climb and a drop. Particularly in the flying junction on the NJ side of the tunnel.

Speed control on a train is drastically impaired when a train is not level. That's because the wheels have very little grip on the track. Remember that minimal friction allows it to move so much weight with minimal power also means it doesn't have much control.

That's why track anywhere near a curve or station tends to be setup to be as flat as possible. But occasionally compromises have to be made. Less curves can only be done if the turn radius is larger, meaning more track distance, moving stations, potentially more obstacles. Even if the train runs faster, the distance can wipe away most of the time improvement.

4

rbastid t1_j17u3le wrote

Riding the NY subway, even at high speeds, I very rarely get jostled around, but with the PATH the thing could be going 5 MPH and it hits a turn that will throw everyone in to the wall.

In Manhattan at least, many of the trains are running a pretty linear path, with a few turns here and there, so speeding up is much more doable.

4

Itchy-Entrepreneur19 t1_j179xrr wrote

Wow, did the ancient folks who constructed the path not realize that the population would definitely increase...along w/ advances other aspects related to engineering or simply updated Path trains???

xmrseanx t1_j190ib3 wrote

In the late 1800s when the Hudson Tubes were first dug, there was barely any underground trains let alone one that was under a river. The local newspapers at the time ridiculed the Tubes and called their creation lunacy and a fool's errand.

DirectorBeneficial48 t1_j1522m7 wrote

And if the train doesn't clip a wall, it'll knock over some unsuspecting passengers on the regular. Get your cameras out, it'll be social media gold.

LemonLily21 t1_j17ca5v wrote

It’s such an easy commute already. I don’t mind the speed, really. What I do think we could improve is our late night and weekend schedule. Jersey City residents don’t only commute to New York during work hours Monday to Friday. That late night and weekend schedule is killer.

3

Beautiful-Living-671 t1_j1enl4s wrote

Because of the way the tunnel twists and turns and is like 150 years old in places I don't think more speed is possible. But the PA should restore the direct weekend daytime service on JSQ-33 and HOB-WTC that they took away in 2006 for "WTC Construction" and then never brought back, hoping everyone would forget that it was heavily used.

3

micmaher99 t1_j14k96m wrote

Are there plans to increase speeds? Will the new train cars allows for faster speeds? What about for between JSQ and Harrison?

2

objectimpermanence OP t1_j159prt wrote

Almost certainly not. The new train cars are the same model as the current ones.

3

doltPetite t1_j16mq0g wrote

The train cars themselves are fine, that's not what keeps it slow and clunky. It has to do with service priorities and the terrible way the lines are set up. They focus too much on rush hour and not enough on the rest of the week. The 33rd st line is just all kinds of terrible, the platforms are too small for longer trains, tracks are ancient and they are too afraid to run trains more tightly on them. I mainly wish they would improve frequency outside of rush hour, and improve the whole interchange/stub situation at Hoboken that is just so damn clunky and slow.

2

pixel_of_moral_decay t1_j17iaxe wrote

They aren't "afraid", it's a simple logic problem. You have 3 platforms at the terminus. You can only have 3 trains in the station. Max. That's basic physics. You can't overlap trains. Anything else has to wait in the tunnel for a slot to open up.

While a train is waiting they also block some capacity for trains to leave the station. It also means if there's a problem on that train (medical emergency, terrorism, fire etc.) there's no easy solution other than wait for a train to depart, or go through the procedure to reverse if there's no train behind it.

From a safety/security perspective, that's absolutely out of the question. Even pre-9/11 that would be wildly careless operating procedures. Trains intentionally don't leave stations in underground transit if they know there's an obstruction ahead that prevents it from reaching the next safe haven.

There's no way people will be understanding if there's a shooting or smoke conditions and the train waited several minutes because "train traffic ahead".

Adding platforms isn't easy on 6th avenue due to subway easements (remember 33rd street isn't actually on 33rd since they already moved that station once for the subway expansion), and adjacent buildings basements being on either side.

The only practical solution would be to build a new station below the existing one, but drilling below an operating station is an insane logistical nightmare as the East Side Access project has shown. NYC is build on heavy bedrock that's not easy to drill, and doing so without disturbing things above it is extremely slow and expensive. It would help if they could just shut down the line for a decade, and/or demo some buildings in the area, but nobody is going to go for that.
