Journal Square is horrible, in fact Jersey City is a terrible place to live stay in NY you’ll regret moving here
I wouldn't. We moved to JSQ and can't wait to move back to NYC.
They’ve been trying to make JSQ nicer for years and it’s still far from it. I’d look somewhere else. Downtown is the nicest but way over priced. Then you have the heights which is quieter but not great if you want night life close by. Then if you want to go a bit further I guess you have Bayonne and union city.
Also jersey city has been increasing taxes pretty quickly so I’d look at that also.
where in queens are you? what are you looking for in a new location? i made the move from queens to jc after 10 years in sunnyside and astoria and while i don’t regret it, i can tell you jc is very different from queens.
do you need to commute into the city? do you want nightlife? diversity of restaurants and bars? would you prefer to be near a park? is a single family house a must have or are you ok with an apartment in a condo building?
What are you looking for? What are your priorities in terms of house search? JSQ is pretty vague and there are pockets which are nice and others that are run down but not dangerous.
Good investment!
Close to PATH, a couple food options, cheaper and quiet than Downtown yet close enough to walk
I am from Europe. I have been leaving in astoria for the past 5 years. We want to move to NJ to get closer to my spouse job. And I work in the city. we have no nightlife, just restaurant bar sometimes.
We found an house in van reypen street
Journal Square, more like Urinal Square, the neighborhood stinks
You could consider renting in Journal Square first to see if it feels like a place you want to live for the next 5+ years... It is different from downtown Jersey City.
Honestly, it's a good time to buy property in the journal square area. It’s really not a bad neighborhood. Easy access to mass transit and nyc. There are many ethnicities in the area and mom and pop shops. It’s pretty safe. And there is a bit of hustle and bustle… which you might appreciate since you live in Queens.
If I had the money, I would buy. My cousin has a small 2 story house that is 3 blocks from the Path. Developers are constantly trying to buy it from him. It’s worth close to 700,000.
In 5 years it’s going to look like another disneyfied soulless corporate ghetto.
Also, if you want to live even a slower life look at Bayonne. The market is hot and is also a good investment.
Thank you for your answer. We are also interested in 2 family house.
Journal square has no soul! I am really liking JC heights. Close enough to go to the city or somewhere cute but far enough away it's quiet. I was living in Brooklyn before.
Thank you for your opinion
Owner here. Not much going on in JSQ and all the constructions are chaotic. I don't mind personally since I'm up for the growth. ;) Hopr you scoop up a deal before it's "hot" and desirable.
Con: Crime, Crime, and I forgot Crime.
Pro: Close to Path
The square is under developed. It’s home to a busy commmnity college so you will see a lot of young people during the day making it there classes as the campus is spread out through journal square. It’s a business area too, a lot of different offices and also elementary schools. It’s one of the busiest places in jersey city, almost like the middle hub, most people pass thru it on their daily commutes. Never gonna have any issues with transportation everything runs through there and u can take the immy busses into Manhattan. Overall it’s not the best place to live sight wise but it’ll change in a few years when all the construction is over and they kicked out the homeless and lower income families so that other more wealthy and privileged people can move in and the property values go up so everyone else can’t afford to live where their parents raised their family anymore
