I have been working out at Base for the last 3 years. But these days the gym has become so crowded that I am not able to squeeze in a proper workout within an hour. Are there any recommendations for a gym that is not crowded? Preferably with squat racks and machines. Willing to pay a premium for the right gym.

Jersey City does not have enough gyms for the population. I think we would benefit from a big high end gym like a LifeTime or Equinox (I know i would join)

I loved Equinox when I was in Manhattan. Would definitely pay for it if they open a location in JC. I wonder why they haven’t opened a JC location despite having gyms at Paramus and Summit. Probably because they are not able to find a suitable spot in JC.

Yeah space is probably a constraint although both these gyms find plenty of space in manhattan so im sure if they wanted it they could make it happen here. I think perhaps the demographics of JC have changed so much over the last decade that too some degree businesses that could work here now havent caught up yet (more gyms, more club like bars, etc.)

You're on the right track. Often times these gyms use median income when deciding where to expand. With Jersey City having such a large population, the median income is 41k. We know most people downtown make much more than that if rent in buildings is upwards of 4k in a high-rise at this point. Seems like a lot of these large corporate gyms have to catch up.

Space is probably also a concern, but I can't see why one of these developers won't come to an agreement for a large commercial gym before they build. Seems like an easy way to make a ton of $ off first-floor commercial.

Not sure what your schedule dictates but if you can 4-5:30pm is pretty decent time, you should be able to get anything you need with relative quickness. Otherwise call it 7:30-8:00pm the after work crowd thins out and again you can get to pretty much anything you need.

If you can pull a lunch hour run that's also a good time. I know that's impossible or pretty hard for most of us these days though.

I can't speak to the before work crowd because I'm not a total masochist. gif

Thanks for your reply. I try to workout before work. The whole of this week, I reached at 6 AM and all the squat racks were taken. Today, a weekend when it was snowing, I went at 10 AM, and the place was jam-packed.

Damn that’s a shame anyone who gets up at 6am deserves a squat rack!

Yea on the weekends it’s pretty packed from 10-1pm later in the afternoon though is quiet if you can make it then.

Man, I dunno what I'd have to make to agree to go to a gym for $144/month, but I'm nowhere near that point

I only pay $100/month for 4. Still expensive, but at least it’s much quieter

I guess they have deals better than what their website says. 100/mo is still far too much for me, but far better than 144

Think you just need to wait for the new years crowd to die down. Every gym gets crowded in the beginning of the year.

Lifetime at 23rd isn’t crowded until 9:45-10:00 on weekends. Right next to PATH 23rd St station.
