I know, I know, it’s old, but mom refuses to get newer phone. I’ve tried everything. IOS is up to date. Grey bar is not the home bar. I’m not able to put any apps on it whatsoever.

What have you tried?
BeautifulMusic1456 OP t1_j5bctkf wrote
I’ve tried restarting, updating, completely resetting.
sillahillone t1_j5bdb3w wrote
does this presist after clean ios install? is it visible only when ios is booted or all the time when the screen is on?
ThinkingPugnator t1_j5bnl2s wrote
but you dont get ios 16 right?
calislidebayarea t1_j5brmin wrote
You should try a DFU mode reset and reinstall iOS through iTunes if you haven't already. Try overwriting the entire OS

Isn’t that the place where you put up to four apps? I didn’t think you could get rid of it
PuzzleheadedLion6673 t1_j5c2ewa wrote
That’s the space for your saved apps. I don’t think it can be removed.
Disastrous_Road_570 t1_j5c5mbk wrote
Can confirm, this is where you put your 4 most used apps (phone, safari, WhatsApp and messages(texting) in my case). I can’t get rid of it either when I remove those apps from it. I think it’s just meant to stay

What happens when you change the background?? I somehow feel it may be your photo that is not fitting properly in full screen
Jztobin t1_j5cqfwu wrote
It’s the dock, part of the home screen then can’t be removed. Put up to 4 apps in it that you use most frequently and they’ll appear on any page of the home screen
Deluxx3 t1_j5csxwk wrote
I believe the dock is solid gray instead of the typical blurred effect because you may have “reduce transparency” enabled in accessibility settings.
Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce Transparency
edit: spelling

Is that how it’s supposed to look like though? Even with reduced transparency, are you sure it’s supposed to fill the entire bottom. I have an iPhone 13 and it it’s rounded, not a rectangle.

So what version iPhone is this? You might be in tough spot if you somehow did a software update that wasn’t compatible
DaDivineLatte t1_j5czaae wrote
I'm ruling this out to be an iOS bug.. You've said you reset it already; maybe this will convince your mother to upgrade? Phone isn't getting any more upgrades anyway so it's already a ticking timebom..

How would he update iOS on an iPhone model that’s not eligible for that specific version? It doesn’t work like this.
Rokstar73 t1_j5d0jar wrote
iPhone 7 if “up to date” as OP states supports up to iOS 15.
Rokstar73 t1_j5d17u3 wrote
What does up to date mean? iOS 15? It already had rounded corners on the dock (I know, you can’t put apps there..). But this isn’t 15, is it? I think 14 had the rectangle dock. What does it say in settings/general/info?
Rokstar73 t1_j5d2dp1 wrote
Have you tried a hard reset? Hold the lower volume and the standby button until the Apple logo appears. See what happens.
Jwill294 t1_j5d4o1x wrote
Yeah that’s why I said somehow. Literally don’t know what going on so just spitballing. Not sure if it’s jail broken or anything, got no info
Rokstar73 t1_j5d4xwg wrote
Yea, there’s a lack of info. I was also thinking jailbreak in the back of my mind. If the phone was reset and set up as new the dock would be filled with some standard apps.
Disastrous_Road_570 t1_j5d5v2k wrote
Yeah mine is transparent and a rounded edge rectangle too. I wonder if it’s because it’s an old model and the new iOS just glitched it 🤷🏻♂️
Delicious_One_7887 t1_j5d9rg3 wrote
No, rounded corners for non home button iPhone and rectangle for home button iPhone

Rokstar73 t1_j5da1y5 wrote
Thanks for the hint. It’s a 7 so that’s why it’s rectangle. I’ve had iPhones since the 3GS but it’s hard to remember every change in the UI over the years.
