I know, I know, it’s old, but mom refuses to get newer phone. I’ve tried everything. IOS is up to date. Grey bar is not the home bar. I’m not able to put any apps on it whatsoever.

Isn’t that the place where you put up to four apps? I didn’t think you could get rid of it

Can confirm, this is where you put your 4 most used apps (phone, safari, WhatsApp and messages(texting) in my case). I can’t get rid of it either when I remove those apps from it. I think it’s just meant to stay

What happens when you change the background?? I somehow feel it may be your photo that is not fitting properly in full screen

It’s the dock, part of the home screen then can’t be removed. Put up to 4 apps in it that you use most frequently and they’ll appear on any page of the home screen

I believe the dock is solid gray instead of the typical blurred effect because you may have “reduce transparency” enabled in accessibility settings.

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce Transparency

edit: spelling

I'm ruling this out to be an iOS bug.. You've said you reset it already; maybe this will convince your mother to upgrade? Phone isn't getting any more upgrades anyway so it's already a ticking timebom..

What does up to date mean? iOS 15? It already had rounded corners on the dock (I know, you can’t put apps there..). But this isn’t 15, is it? I think 14 had the rectangle dock. What does it say in settings/general/info?

Yea, there’s a lack of info. I was also thinking jailbreak in the back of my mind. If the phone was reset and set up as new the dock would be filled with some standard apps.
