Basically the title but yes, 9 times out of 10 when I long press on an app I don't need a shortcut or a widget, I want to adjust the app settings. I know 3D touch isn't a thing but even so it's one small thing that would make the user experience better.

Why not just a generic app shortcut that’s customizable
weedwhacking t1_j1ei5w3 wrote
Why not both!

Both is overkill

I agree. One of the things that was missed from Android. Digging through an entire settings app seemed like a longer than necessary process.
TypicalNameToChoose t1_j1guh5b wrote
Just click on the settings app, that should solve you're problem of getting to settings

I still miss 3D Touch, literally dozens of us that remember it at this point.
GTS_BENZ t1_j1ek90n wrote
Worst part is when you need a flashlight, on the X you could just grab your phone and press the flash on your lockscreen with a little force and it would shine, on the newer iphones you have to hold it for a bit and it is very easy to misclick
DoYouLikeBASSSSS t1_j1g3q24 wrote
This ^^ especially with the camera, I use my phone quite a lot at times during work, where I have to quickly take a photo and then shove my phone back into my pocket and then get it out of my pocket to take another photo again (and yes, I like to lock my screen after taking a single photo), and this goes on continuously for an hour or more, recently just switched from XS Max to 14 Pro Max and it seriously slowed my workflow, and just the overall lack of confidence when long pressing the camera icon from the Lock Screen to make it launch the camera, is just not a good feeling
sapiengator t1_j1g9u3t wrote
I too miss 3D Touch, but it’s not needed to access your camera quickly from the Lock Screen - just swipe right.
DoYouLikeBASSSSS t1_j1gcfb1 wrote
Oh shoot, how could I forget that, the numerous times I’ve accidentally swiped right on the lock screen when I was using the XS Max, thanks for reminding me, I was just so used to 3D Touch

Yeah! Annoying. Also off topic I wish they’d get rid of FOCUS

Honestly, 3D Touch was a good part of why I held on to my 6s as long as I did. Really loved the feature; it’s simple to use, effective and its tactile-ness with the haptic feedback and “pop/push” or whatever the marketing term was, made it so pleasant to use.
pxr555 t1_j1f0cbc wrote
It was nice but because no iPad supported it it never was used for anything substantial. I quickly stopped using it on my iPhone because it didn’t work on my iPad anyway and as soon as I got used to it I automatically tried using it on the iPad and it didn’t work there.

Haptic/3D Touch got downgraded so badly. For example it used to show 4 favorite contacts when you pressed the phone app, now it’s useless settings. This applies to almost every stock ios app.

This is what I get when I long-press on the camera app on iPhone: Photo
That should be a shortcut to settings there! Can not understand why Apple fix that.
TheNerdNamedChuck t1_j1ec0wl wrote
yes seems there is no app info button
Knashatt t1_j1ec6wr wrote
Yeah, Apple should at least fix a shortcut to the setting for the app there.
joeytitans t1_j1e7wvh wrote
I’m confused, what does this screenshot show that iOS doesn’t provide?
TheNerdNamedChuck t1_j1ebu3y wrote
the buttons at the top, not the quick action things. stuff like app info, pack apk, view on play store, etc
grvisgr8 t1_j1e8h1l wrote
That i button is most probably for the app info which is not available in iOS

Why not? It looks nice.
Besides, why is that relevant? This is the UI of that person’s own phone, and each person’s device ought to be tailored to what they like. It’s their phone, they like it. Your negativity isn’t relevant.

3D touch was great, I used the shortcut for the app switcher quite often because it was just so easy to use. I’ve been without a home button for a couple months now and I still can’t open the app switcher first try half the time.

How often do you find yourself adjusting an app’s settings within the settings app? Most of the apps I use have barely anything in there and instead opt for having a settings page within the app itself
navjot94 t1_j1ep7mp wrote
To change notification settings or permissions for those apps. You have to go to settings and scroll/search to get to the app’s system settings. If they had an App Settings option in the long press menu, it could take you directly to that screen.
WIMOS t1_j1eq4cc wrote
Deciding what elements show in that long press menu is up to the app’s developers themselves
navjot94 t1_j1evlcr wrote
Most are not gonna do that and i don’t think devs can invoke the system settings from those shortcuts. They likely only allow you to trigger intents for your own app- but I could be wrong.
This would be useful for example, bc you could quickly toggle permissions for apps or turn notifications on/off for those apps. This is also in line with iOS behavior in other situations. For example if you swipe to “options” from a notification, all the menus that pop up there include a “view settings” option. Should work the same way on the Home Screen, that just takes you to that app’s system settings page.
_yetisis t1_j1fa1dv wrote
That’s it’s own problem too. Or apps getting to determine whether or not you have a way to delete their cached data instead of that being a system-wide ability like it ought to be

Enough that they want the feature, obviously.

I literally thought about this today while attempting to access the general settings for Twitter then quickly realizing there's missed opportunity. It'd be so convenient, and an easy fix to improve UX instead of going through and extra 20-45 seconds of taps and swipes. It sounds entitled and negligible, but this shouldn't require a groundbreaking software shift to complete- I'd expect it to have been done already.

I really miss 3D Touch. I still like the way iOS operates without it, but it’s not the same. Would be cool idea to access settings too by long pressing an app.
