It was the beta! Thanks a bunch!

I had the same problem and despite trying this more than a few times it didn’t work. What did eventually work was installing through iTunes on my computer (even that failed the first 2 or 3 times)

how do you check to see if you have the beta profile/how would you delete it? i see in my storage something labeled iOS 15.7.1 that’s 5.5gb but i’ve deleted that and redownloaded to no avail several time :(

You go to settings > general > VPN and device management as Ret42 told me below

Got the same message when updating to 16.1.1. Clicked two times on retry nothing happened. Clicked on remind me later and the update started.

Thanks a lot to those that helped. I’m gonna leave this up in case anyone has an issue like this in the future. As suggested, I had to delete the beta profile sitting in my device management and then it allowed me to go right to 16. I appreciate all your guys’ info. As a few others suggested, it did also allow me to update straight to 16 thru the Finder on my Mac as well if deleting the beta didn’t work

I had this issue with my iPad recently. Do you have it set up with a beta profile? If so, go to settings -> general -> VPN & Device Management, select the beta profile and remove it. Once you’ve done that you should be able to download iOS 16, so you can remove the downloaded 15.7.

You hit the nail on the head. It was the beta profile. Deleted and worked right after. Thanks!

Why not iOS 16?
ncorey22 OP t1_iyahg5n wrote
It was because I had an iOS 15 beta profile apparently. I was trying to get to 16 so I could pair my new watch with it but thought I had to go to 15.7.1 first before reaching 16. Turns out once I deleted the beta it allowed me to go straight to 16. This whole process showed me I’m not very tech-savvy lol

It’s likely an Apple side problem (the update isn’t signed correctly or something). Just try again tomorrow and see if it’s working.

I have tried resetting multiple times and have switched networks, cleared up more storage, and reset network settings and even all settings. I’ve tried deleting the update and reinstalling multiple times. Nothing seems to work. I have an iPhone XR if that helps but it shows it is supported for iOS 16 on apple’s official site. Is there a way to update it thru my Mac?

15.7.1 OTA is no longer being signed by Apple so that could be why it’s giving an error; they’re not approving the installation.

Only 16.1 and 16.1.1 will work as of now. Try going straight to one of those via iTunes?

Tried to update it via the IPSW file with a Mac or PC?
ncorey22 OP t1_iy9w2dc wrote
To be honest, I didn’t even know you could do that. I’ll look up how to do it and try it

I’m getting the same problem but I believe it’s because I have replaced the battery with a non apple battery and now it won’t let me update iOS

No. In my case it was a trip to the Apple store.

Try switching from Wi-Fi, to cellular, and vice versa. See if one of them will "stick".

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and wait for your apps to populate. If there are any iOS updates then delete them. Also, check to see if you have the iPhone 15 beta profile installed. If so, delete it. Just to be sure after these things restart your device and then try to update again.
