Been thinking about getting one so I can upgrade from my garbage old Huawei I've had for a few years now, but how long will they be updated for, because I know they're a few years old now, will they stop being supported soon?

Well iOS 17 may not run on it but most apps would probably still work.

The 8 and X are both five years old so will likely have support dropped at the same time.

The XS/XR are the ones you’re looking for.

Apple just dropped support for phones older than the 8 this year.

So it could be next year, or the year after, or the year after that. We don’t know for sure.

If you really want to be safe, get an XR or 11.

X uses the same chip as the 8 so iOS 16 may be the last. But I wouldn’t be too surprised if the 8 and X still got iOS 17 but it seems unlikely. XR should get iOS 17 without a doubt.

If you want the same form factor a iPhone SE 2020 or even better 2022, would be a safer bet longevity-wise.
