Hey all, I’ve had an iPhone my whole life, I know it’s normal for them to heat up when charging or using a heavy app (such as a game)

I just got my 14 pro last week and it’s heating up like crazy though no matter what I do. Even just going on YouTube or Reddit, it’s warm (not hot enough where I have to put it down, but warm enough I feel it through my case)

I was at a concert & filming on it the phone got HOT - I never had these issues on my 12 pro max

Is this normal?

I don’t back up to cloud. I close my apps when I’m done with them. I’m not downloading anything. Just getting warm during every day use.

Is this normal for the 14 pro? Should I see if Verizon will let me exchange it? Or should I just wait and hope an iOS update fixes it

My 12 Pro Max has had overheating issues usually when using gps apps when driving. I’ve had to put it in a vent mount with the AC on to stop it. I get out of the car to take pictures and can’t see the screen since its dimmed to 50% max. I was planning to get a 14 Pro Max hoping to get rid of the issue. Never had this problem with previous iPhones.

I would check the battery menu in the settings look at the last 10 days, it sounds like there is some background usage. I would compare there and shut those apps access.

That being said, you actually should not force close your apps. iOS manages resources so closing them actually uses more power.

Actually you just reminded me of my 12 pro max issues with the gps, I literally did the same thing with the AC vent, forgot to list it in my post because I don’t use the gps much so it wssnt fresh in my head

Interestingly enough I used my gps on the 14pro on a 2 hour drive yesterday it was hot but no where near as hot as the 12pro max and the screen didn’t dim

While I can’t answer all your questions, I can say that you don’t need to fully close apps every time you’re done using it. In fact it’s much more efficient to hold it in RAM then it is to launch from scratch every time. You should only really kill apps if you know it’s misbehaving.

As for the heat, try resetting network settings/all settings from the reset menu and see if that fixes anything. After that try doing a factory reset to see if that helps at all.

Because no, it shouldn’t get hard to hold in normal usage, my 14 Pro never gets very warm at all. But do know that you may notice a little more heat than before since the 14 Pro has a larger heat spreader and more graphite film than Apple has ever used before so your phone may feel a little warmer than your older ones where the heat was very concentrated at the SOC.

Unfortunately I did a factory reset 3 days ago so I only have 3 days of battery data, looks like messaging using 18% of it and YouTube is using 11%

Phone only gets hot on YouTube or camera use tho , I don’t notice it messaging or checking Reddit

So my thing is it’s not like hot hot where I can’t hold it, but definitely warm where I feel it through a silicon case. If the warm isn’t an issue with the phone I’m fine with it, it doesn’t particularly bother me but I’m worried that the phone might be broken or something.

When it overheats, does the screen dim? That's the one thing I hate about my 12PM. It makes the phone essentially unusable on hot summer days, and I never had that problem on previous iPhones.

This sounds like the issue is only getting worse.

For what it’s worth, thermals are better on the 14Pro than on my 12Pro.

So I haven’t had the screen dim yet, I drove 2 hours yesterday with the phone charging the entire time while gps & music playing thru Bluetooth and no dimming so that’s good

Yep same here but iPhone 13 Pro on iOS 16.1 so I think the 16.1 update is the culprit here. Hope it gets fixed soon because my phone gets too warm now and it’s uncomfortable to hold.

You should be doing this in case something happens to your phone and you lose everything

> close my apps when I’m done with them

It’s actually better for your device and battery not to close your apps. iOS already does this and keeps apps in the memory to preserve battery and you manually closing them messes with it.

As for the heating up, your maybe the third or so post I’ve seen with heating up on 14 Pro using YouTube and reddit. One post the other day was using YouTube in PiP and was experiencing the same problem. Also, what reddit app do you use? The stock reddit one is pretty trash, always use Apollo.

You could try a factory reset before taking it back.

so.... i tried some things to fix this issue
•Reset All Settings in settings app > didn't work, i just got all my passwords and apps setup messed up;
•Downgraded to 16.0.3 > my latest backup was in 16.1, so i couldn't restore a 16.0.3 phone using a 16.1 backup. its my main device, so i don't have the privilege and time to organize and download everything again using the old version;
•Reinstalled the 16.1 and restored it using my latest backup > i'll try this fresh reinstall of iOS and see if it helps.

Here’s my full experience w thus update:

UPDATE 1: Tried some things to fix this issue
•Reset All Settings in settings app > didn't work, i just got all my passwords and apps setup messed up;
•Downgraded to 16.0.3 > my latest backup was in 16.1, so i couldn't restore a 16.0.3 phone using a 16.1 backup. its my main device, so i don't have the privilege and time to organize and download everything again using the old version;
•Reinstalled the 16.1 and restored it using my latest backup > i'll try this fresh reinstall of iOS and see if it helps. I will post a next EDIT with results in some days. Wish me luck

UPDATE 2: the fresh iOS16.1 installation didn't work. my 13Pro kept overheating and draining battery
•Tried the 16.2 Public beta but no effect > Just got my battery life worse do to 97% (keep in mind i had 98% in 16.1).
•Downgraded to 16.0.3. i didn't have a 16.0.3 backup, so i dis a fresh downgrade and installed every single app manually. Testing right now and i can say that overheating stopped. streamed some videos using YT premium in PIP and did it great! im not sure about the battery drain problem. lets see if apple f*ucked up my battery calibration for good or im back with good an reliable software.
