Yep, release day 14 Pro Max w T-Mobile. No eSIM previously, but no issues switching over even on the day of release Sept 16th.
Using it currently and haven’t had any issues. Set up was a breeze.
Why did they go to e sim? Why not stick w regular sim card
From a technical perspective, eSIM v.s. physical SIM shouldn't have any real impact on service quality.
"SIM" stands for "Subscriber Identity Module". It's just something that stores an identity (a fancy serial number).
It's not an antenna. It doesn't do any "connecting" or "receiving". The phone asks the SIM (whether physical or digital) for its fancy serial number and then passes that number along to cellular towers when establishing a connection with them.
Any difference in service quality would be the result of the phone and its antennas *or* the network and its cellular towers, not how the SIM part is implemented.
No problems here 14 Pro. If you have a traditional T-Mobile account with Alison restrictions should be able to transfer the Sim from the old phone to your new phone without a problem.
All US 14 models
Yea it’s great no issues loving it so far
Yeah I got the pro max. I needed the bigger screen to surf the web while hiding in the bathroom at work.
I have had no problems with e sim at all. It did take a day after switching phone number from Verizon for messages and stuff to totally work.
Phone has been flawless since.
This should be higher up. Can’t upvote enough.
I've had my 14 Pro for over a week now. Using eSim on T-Mobile. Have had no issues at all.
Many reasons. The most important reasons:
I do, it was seamless as could be. My new phone prompted me to transfer my number to my new phone and to bring my old one next to it, pressed continue on both phones and BAM, all done
In theory that should be the case but in practice that’s not the case I have had issues with my iPhone 13 Pro on T-Mobile with Esim. All of a sudden it just turns off all connections including Wi-Fi only a reboot can fix it.
I brought it to Apple to see if it was my device they replaced everything but screen and camera module , replacement included new e sim chip , and it still happens occasionally.
14 pro max on tmobile here. No previous esim. Transfer from regular sim to esim was smooth as it can be. Way better speeds and coverage but that is not because the esim change, iphone 14 lineup have a better modem
Been using esim on iphone since iphone 12, now 14PM, no issues. eSIM only really hurt carrier by killing their sim card fees lol. Initial rollout few years ago was not great since tmobile didnt officially support and you need to give them the sim card no like a regular sim card. Now with sim to esim transfer, or esim to esim transfer. You can do this without getting tmo involve and easy
Zero issues here. Switching to the e-sim was effortless. Getting actual 5G connectivity where I live, however, is a different story …
It's "not needed", sure, but you lose the convenience of being able to remove a sim card and put it into another phone and just having it work.
What happened to Apple's mantra of "it just works"?
Physical SIM cards on a GSM network are the pinnace of "it just works".
I have a physical T-Mobile SIM. I can put it into an iPhone and it "just works". I can then take it out and put it into a different phone and it still "just works". It's great! If my phone breaks, I can take a old spare phone out of a drawer or out of my car's glove box, pop the sim in there, and I'm good to go.
With an eSIM you just can't do that. You need to call the carrier or go to their website in order to transfer service to a new device.
What if I'm away from home, and my phone breaks, but I have a spare phone with me? If my primary phone was an iPhone 14 with eSIM, I'm screwed regardless. I can't move the SIM over because it doesn't physically exist. I can't call my carrier to move it over because my phone is broken. Apple took something that worked great and created a situation which makes it more likely to be stuck without a working phone.
No issues for me, went from Galaxy S20FE to 14PM. All I needed to do was log into my T-Mobile account, look for my line and scan my QR with the iPhone during setup. Super easy, super fast.
I have had zero issues regarding the esim. Setup was easy, asked for your # and then you get a text on sim card phone with verification. Takes a few minutes and done.
No connectivity issues in the US nor when I went to Europe.
You can transfer esim with two iPhone next to each other as long they both support it. Flawless for me so far
Not if one of them is broken. Which is one of the most common cases where you'd need to switch sims urgently.
And, what if I want my "spare phone" to be an older iPhone (or even an Android) that doesn't support esim? I'm not going to keep a $1,000+ iPhone as a spare. I'd rather have it be a <$100 phone from a few years ago.
two points.
How often do you actually break your iPhone that you can’t retrieve data from it? I know it’s a valid reason, but me personally since 2010 I never had that issue
second point. the iPhone SE 2020 64gb is the cheapest iPhone that supports esim which you can buy as a backup. on swappa, those are going for $165 on average. No need for a $1000 spare iPhone.
>How often do you actually break your iPhone that you can’t retrieve data from it?
I don't know. How often do you need to make an emergency call via Satellite to have emergency services rescue you from the wilderness? For most people the answer is also "almost never". But it's clearly big enough of a deal for Apple to flex it in every iPhone 14 ad. Same thing applies here. Even if you probably won't need to use it any time soon, it's good to have the feature there. Why remove it?
$165 is still pretty steep for a spare phone.
If it's just something to keep in the glove box in case of an emergency, I'm not going to invest $165 into it. An iPhone 6 (usually around $50-60 in used condition) would do the trick.
iPhones from 2018+ support esim
I’m in Texas, eSim has been fine, only having issues when T-Mobile has been connecting to “5GUC” so I turned 5G off completely and have only been using LTE. Been perfect since then.
I made the upgrade from 12 ProMax to 14 ProMax without any issues. I’m on T-Mobile and the setup was seamless for me. Took less than 30 seconds to move to e-sim.
I’ve been using T-Mobile with e-Sim for about 4 years. First with iPhone XR, then iPhone 12 mini, and now with a 14 Pro Max. No worries, it works great!
I have both a Verizon plan and a t-mobile plan on my 14 pro max and have not had any issues with either service. Both eSIMs were super easy to set up and have had no connectivity or reliability issues.
Great job explaining!
Apple Technical Expert
If you’re going to get a new iPhone, I highly recommend doing it at the Apple Store. Unless there is an amazing deal without any catches at T-Mobile, Apple is a far, far better choice. The Specialists at Apple will help you through the buying, activation, and setup process and won’t try to upswell you anything because that’s just not Apple’s model. Even something like hardware coverage for your device will cost less at Apple. T-Mobile stores are parasites that upsell everything they can and charge more for the same hardware and services. I used to be a T-Mobile customer but never again.
That's why I switched to eSim even if I'm in Europe, less openings
Well here it's the same price for esim or physical sim, so the SIM card is hurting the carrier
Yeah that’s not eSim issue and the second part of your post where they replaced literally whole phone except for screen and cameras? Yeaaaahhhh that never happened lmao
14 Pro Max on TMo Prepaid here. I’ve only had it for a couple days so far but I haven’t had any reception issues or anything. Transferring my physical SIM (from an Android phone) to eSIM required a phone call since I’m on prepaid but it was a quick painless call. No complaints!
What is your previous iPhone? Does it support esim? Probably, yes. https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT212780
If not, it will next time obviously =)
It might be harder to travel internationally without a physical sim though, but there is at least some support for esim internationally
The mantra still stands because esim just works.
I’m using 12 pro max with T-Mobile eSIM I ditched my sim and have no problems. You can set it up from the T-Mobile app
