You’re gonna come crying back when your phone is stolen and sold as unlocked because there was no passcode. Ah well, I guess this is what I get for trying to help someone…

Yes, I am. It prevents access to personal data. So you could give someone the phone, and they would need to erase it to sell it, removing your personal data.
