I went to school for archaeology. Eventually decided it wasn’t for me. It’s a fascinating field but actually doing it involves many long, hot days hunched over in a hole and scraping at dirt with a trowel. It’s grueling. I’m glad others do it though.

Also, a dig season usually lasts only a couple of months for those of us in academic archaeology. It goes by all too quickly, and there’s a common (and surprisingly accurate) joke that the most exciting finds are made on the last day.
The rest of the year is spent teaching, applying for grants, publishing and presenting at conferences, etc.

Yeah, I always picture Carter staring thru the hole at Tut's treasures when I think archeology. Like you, I'm happy others do it and write about it.

I always think the people who work uncovering and interpreting stuff like this have the best jobs in the world.
