Just got the HD700 into and I'm a little confused on how to feel about the sound. I knew the driver was the same as the HD660s, which I've been daily driving for months now, so I was expecting them to be a lot closer which they aren't at all. DMS said it best, these are weird. Mostly because they don't sound like Sennheisers normal sound with a huge emphasis on the mids.

Idk what I was expecting but the best way I can describe them is like an exaggerated HD560s? I thought the HD560s were much more playful headphones compared to the 600 series, so the 700's feel a lot like that. Playful but with more exaggeration. INSANELY Better sound stage, more bass. Details are alittle hazy, but still there? Like if the HD660s was a color palette of blocks of individual colors, the HD700 is a rgb rainbow color wheel where it's all blended together.

It's going to take me more listening to decide if these are for me, but whichever I like more I'm going to keep and the others I'll sell.

There are quite a bit of discussions online regarding 660S and 700 drivers. Some say 660S is based on 700, but that doesn't mean it is the same driver. Others made measurements and say they have similar impedance and phase response, but then they don't sound alike at all.

I guess at end of the day, it is how they sound that matters, regardless of their driver design. Let us know your verdict when you have thoroughly compared them.

Every time I see a post about the HD700, I start talking myself into looking for one, and every time I (begrudgingly) decide against it. Hopefully I go through with it before they get expensive and hard to find.

As someone who tried and ended up loving the HD8XX, this is a super intriguing headphone to me.

I ordered a pair of HD700 on eBay. The seller had 100% feedback over many years, including lots of audio products.

He didn't ship the headphones for weeks and kept going back and forth, using COVID as an excuse. Finally he sent me an HD700 box but it had a pair of SHP-9500 in them. Got a refund and ended up finding another pair of HD700 for $50 cheaper.

I've never heard the HD660S, but bought a used HD700 with the intention of running them with Oratory1990's EQ setting, because of:

  • low unit-to-unit variation
  • low measurement variation depending on the placement on the head
  • sound doesn't change that much with pad wear (reportedly HD6XX series pads change the sound after just a year).

That did not work with my K702, my unit had a different placement of peaks and dips in the FR. I settled on a bass shelf with them and was happy, though they do get fatiguing after a while.

With HD700 it worked well and the sound is very good. Has the non-fatiguing tonal balance of K371 but with more sparkle and soundstage.

They are very different headphones. The driver has almost nothing to do with the final sound compared to the enclosure and damping.

I was going to pick up the 660s, it would be my first real headphone and I was going to pair it with the topping dx3 pro +. How much do you like them?
