Reply to comment by gigi_boeru in I bought my fiancee his first proper headphones for Christmas. Bonus a top hat attachment I made :) by RabbitLorx
More like birthday which sits nicely in the middle of the year. I got the JDS element 3 for my own headphones but I might look at something cheaper for him since he isnt as invested as I am in audio. The Audioquest dragonflys look interesting. Or I might go see what my local hifi stores have on sale. For now he is happy about how it sounds and it dosnt sound terrible plugged straight into his PC as a temporary thing.

The Audioquest Dragonflies are a bit outdated and overpriced considering what you can buy nowadays, and not much of an upgrade over some onboard solutions (guessing he has a decent mobo since you mentioned he plays competitively).
Put it on hold until you can afford something a bit nicer if he ends up not satisfied with onboard, but also no need to exaggerate with how good entry level dac/amps are nowadays.

True, you can get the same performance & power with a 10$ Apple USB-C dongle.

Thank you for the advice. We both have gaming Desktops but his is better than mine so his soundcard may be better. I will have to sit down and have a proper listening test.

You say you have an Element, what feeds the Element?

Sorry, what do you mean?

oh my apologies, the element is a dac+amp, i thought it was just an amp.

I would recommend the Qudelix 5K. In case he want to use BT or EQ down the road.

Requisite comment saying you don’t need a specific device to EQ if your OS is Windows.
