I had the HD599 for a couple years, and it definitely did not need an amp, but I definitely noticed some improvement when amping. It won’t be as dramatic a difference as you’d see with higher impedance headphones. They’re among the most comfortable headphones I ever had, though, and they’re great for more laid back music.

Definitely comfortable headphones yes :) I've got led zeppelin playing at moment which sounds pretty good. I've been listening to sennheiser hd250bt and was really impressed with the sound considering they are wireless so thought I'd take a chance on these :)

Let me hijack this discussion, if that's ok with you, and ask a couple questions about the HD599:
- What benefits can I hope to achieve from amping them? I normally plug them either into my phone or my laptop and they are okayish but I'd say they lack body -- way too much treble, not enough of the rest. I tried EQ-ing them based on AutoEq profiles (with some experimentation) but somehow I liked the sound even less.
- I see a lot of praise for their comfort but for me they are a torture device. I can use them for maybe an hour, two is a stretch. The pads feel hard and itchy. What am I doing wrong? What are some other headphones you are comparing them to?
Ouch, I sound way more negative than I actually feel about them, just don't know how to explain myself better. :/

I feel like mine sound abit too deep and bassy through the amp but it may just be down to the source from amazon music. Amazon definitely sounds better than tidal on them though I think as tidal seems even deeper and flatter. Perhaps I should give them a go straight into phone and see how they sound then. I prefer abit more treble so probably suit me better lol

I've just tried the EQ on USB audio Pro player and it makes a huge difference thanks :) just a shame it doesn't work with Amazon Music :( may have to swap over to tidal once the free account runs out

If youre listening over your computer, i would recommend installing Equalizer APO and Peace (for Equalizer APO). I thought my 660s sounded great, until i used the Auto EQ, which made a huge difference in clarity.

Thanks. I will try it out on my laptop. Is that with streaming Tidal?

It applies EQ to all audio, so you can stream whatever you want. When you have it downloaded, you just need to click the "AutoEQ" button, then search for your headphones, and thats it.
