This is concerning.

I always had Sennheiser held at the highest quality possible.

I'm still surprised they cheaped out on the HD600's design and box too, that change was so unnecessary. Sennheiser HD6x0 lineup is already quite plasticky for the price in my opinion.

I guess everything for a nickel with their management nowadays, but they are starting to degrade the company's reputation this way.

The change to the Sennheiser build and boxes was a couple years before they sold to sonova though. Back in 2019

I don't think the plastic matters much since it's quite durable and has quite literally stood the test of time. Durable lightweight and probably easier to produce if I had to guess. Don't care if a headphone is plastic or metal once it's sitting on my head as long as it's durable.

From my experience at least, the problem with plastic is it tends to get brittle with age. My old HD600 failed when one of the plastic pieces that hold the drivers in the cups cracked when I was swapping the cable - wasn't applying any kind of extraordinary force or anything. That said, if making them more durable would double the cost or something, I'd rather just get another set of cheaper headphones.
