Just curious whats the worse or best reaction you've gotten along the years when you met people and told them your hobby is about headphones.

I was in my new company last week and when they talked about spending money on food, various kinds of food but I spent mine on headphones they felt weird, which I've gotten used to. Some might ask, how many ears you got? XD

The conversation went something like this~

Colleague: "Hey, you listen to any music?"

Me: "Yes ofc I listen to music daily."

Colleague: "Yeah I got the new apple headphones, the noise canceling are crazy and sounds so good."

Me: "That's cool, I listen to music on my headphone also every now and then."

Colleague: "How come I never see you wear them to work?"

Me: "They're wired so it'd be inconvenient to bring them."

Colleague: "Why not just some good wireless headphones?"

Me: "Well they sound really good."

Colleague: "How much they cost?"

Me: "umm.. they're pretty expensive I'll say."

Colleague: "What, $400? 500?"

Me: "A little over 3k."

Colleague: "Why would you spend that much on a wired headphoen?" 😐😐

Me: "It sounds good."

End of conversation.

It kills people when they know "wired" ones cost so much.

I have a friend who had LCD-x and when others knew the price all went wild.

"You pay so much for such an ugly and inconvenient thing?"

YEah, for us its the sound and comfort that matter, but for non audiophile i guess its the aesthetic XD

Like I dont think the appearance of stax can be accepted by normal ppl

I own a 650 and agree with your SO. But it doesn't matter when I put them on because I can't see them. Plus, they sound great!

Carlsen94 OP t1_jdpp9mj wrote

I let her listen to 650 she said its good too!

I recently got her a beyerdynamic mmx100 because she needs to mic to be portable for office use and she loves the design!

After awhile she is very happy with the sound quality!

She quote” i can hear more than just bass now”

InFortunaWeLust t1_jdq5zyv wrote

its not "non audiophiles" its just low iq people in general. smart people value quality over everything. I was taught well by my parents when very young to value quality over quantity, my mom would say 1 pair of high quality shoes is better than having to buy 3-4 shoes that fall apart in less time.

when i hear these type of stories you guys are sharing about your friends going crazy about the price or whatever you enjoy spending your own money on makes me wonder why you keep such idiotic type of people around you lol.

They definitely get sticker shock when I tell them I have 30ish ranging from $14 to $1400.

I usually speak with such enthusiasm about it, they get interested too.

And since I usually have my Bathys with me, I’ll give them a little taste and then they get it.

They may find it a little strange, but I tell them people have strange collections all the time. Mine just happens to be enjoying music on great sounding gear.

12

Carlsen94 OP t1_jdm1mub wrote

Wow you seem to be a collector.

Which is your favourite pair?

2

I have a few.

Open: Focal ClearMg

Closed: Focal Radiance

Wireless Over Ear: Focal Bathys

Wireless TWS: Galaxy Buds2 Pro

Wired IEM: Blessing 2: Dusk

I like to listen to the rest here and there to keep my ear trained, but my Focals hit me in the feels when I sit back and just close my eyes and just….listen.

My S.O found out that I bought new IEMs, and she was passively mad, saying that they all sound the same. I explained to her the differences, and I thought the easiest way to do that was to say, 'The more expensive they are, the more I can hear each instrument.' This led to a fight, but later on, I explained that it's a good investment because I use my IEMs during work and while sleeping. World peace was achieved (for now or til I bought a new one)

Urpsurps t1_jdqee08 wrote

You really just need 2. A good chef’s knife and a good paring knife. Then expand from there if you really get into cooking and find use cases for specialized knives.

The trick is finding a chef’s knife that you love. There’s the German style (wusthof, henckels, messermeister) known for a shape that encourages a rocking motion when cutting. They often have thick bolsters that some do not like. Makes it hard to sharpen the blade from top to base.

There’s the French style which is similar to German, but its shape is less curved. Look for knives made in Thiers.

Then there are the Japanese styles which have been very popular. Look for a gyuto (sp?), it’s a hybrid of western and eastern styles. Too many brands to list, but a good starter brand would be Tojiro DP.

Look for a forged blade and a balance that feels good to you.

tonyklol t1_jdlg51k wrote

https://www.cnet.com/reviews/headroom-airhead-review/

The AirHead portable headphone amp boosts the output and sound quality of the puny amplifiers in iPods and MP3 and portable CD players--and it works like a charm, although some users may find it too bulky. HeadRoom sells the AirHead online for $149.

This little amp is nonetheless slightly larger than an iPod--it measures 2.875 inches wide, 1 inch high, and 4.125 inches deep, and it weighs less than a pound fully loaded with 4 AAA batteries. That extra heft helps explain why the AirHead so easily betters the flyweight amps built into portable players.

4 AAA batteries babyyy

What usually happens is that I mention that I like headphones and say what I have and they pretend to be interested and then the conversation moves on. The person might have the opportunity to try something out for one reason or another and I end up with a DM asking what they can get for cheap to get a taste of what they heard.

One story I have: A friend of mine needed a pair of headphones for a Teams call and she didn't have any so I just let her borrow the Audio Technica ATH-M50X I had since I wasn't using them and they weren't too expensive. She said they sounded amazing and asked how much they cost. I said they were actually quite cheap (£120) but apparently my version of cheap and her's were very different. Either way, she ended up buying some Sony WH1000 XM4 a few weeks later after she had saved up. Not exactly audiophile quality but way better than what she was using before.

1

Joulle t1_jdmxf1e wrote

They're very convenient at least but audio quality wise I wouldn't rank them that high if they're anything like the older xm3's. Probably great for teams calls with the integrated mic and all the other features tbh

1

NotNerd-TO t1_jdqhw86 wrote

The actual sound quality isn't too bad and the ANC is great. The tuning for headphones is just bad. Once you turn down the bass to a reasonable level, they're actually ok. And for someone like my friend who hadn't heard anything better, they sound amazing.

1

Joulle t1_jdquy0g wrote

Yeah. I can dig them even with stock sound but they're definitely better with some EQ to tune down that bass.

The good thing with the sonys is that I at least can't really hate them, only dislike. While I can't listen to the DT1990 without EQing the mount Beyer down, the 8kHz bump. It's too piercing.

2

andysaurus_rex t1_jdmaeg6 wrote

Oh god no I don't tell them that lol

If someone comes over and sees the headphones and goes "those look fancy" I'll tell them yeah they are but tbh I have no interest in going down the rabbit hole with them.
