I think its different for everyone. Which is why I think if you're dabbling in premium sound for the first time, start smaller. Grab a pair of 58x's or 6xx's to start and see what you notice. Don't go and buy a pair of thousand dollar cans until you've gotten your feet wet.

A pair of 58X or a pair of Beyers will probably awake some feelings for you, both are quite the opposite of each other.

But yeah I agree, start cheap, don't go head first into it.

Yeah I certainly am not going to spend thousands just to listen to In Rainbows over and over again.

100-200 pound seems about right for a first bash at it.

The 58x's are the easier of the two to drive. An amp will help bring out the sound more, but optional with the 58x.

If you go the 6xx route, you'll need an amp for sure.

Should also mention that even if you expand your headphone collection later on, I think both the 58x or 6xx are a pair that everyone comes back to. They are the starting point for a lot of people, including myself.
