From left to right: VE Monk, Faaeal Snow Lotus, Edifier H190, KBear Stellar, Moondrop Shiro Yuki, Faaeal Iris Ancestor.

I grew up in the mid 90s and winding up a pair of earbuds into the plastic case was the perfect end to a listening session.

Sadly the plastic winder cases are gone but I still love the fit and feel and yes, the sound, of flathead buds. The extended bass on IEMs is nice, but they give me an uncomfortable sinus pressure so I never really latched on. Another sad thing is all of my 90s… vintage? :( buds are long gone. Funnily enough I’ve never thought to grab a pair of MX500s.

Anyone else still love flathead buds?

Edit: Not sure if it’s more appropriate to make a new post or edit this but I just got my FF5s in the mail. Bottom line up front: Like with so many things, diminishing returns. They are really good and a welcome addition to the collection. The build quality and the accessories included are top notch. I think the braided cable is a little heavy and unwieldy for portable use so I’m looking for a shorter TPE alternative with mmcx connectors. If you have the means and want “the” flat head this is probably your ticket.

If your new to flat heads, don’t have the disposable income and aren’t worried about mmcx connectors there are a hundred fish in the sea under $30 that will get the job done.

Which of these do you use the most often, and how much are they? I've been thinking about getting some Earbuds.

Honestly, I'm not "a fan" but in the recent years I got 3 as I heard they got much better than they were in the past and guess what? I like them!

I got:

  • NiceHCK Traceless
  • Moondrop VX Classics
  • NiceHKC Eb2s

Out of those I like the moondrop one more, as it is more detailed and brighter but of course it simply won't stay on my ears for the life of me.
The EB2S is very good but believe it or not I loved the sound of the traceless, which I bought for about 3 dollars. It was so cheap I'm giving it to a friend of mine who likes earbuds.

OP, which of these is your favorite? I am considering forking some cash for the Fiio FF5 but it's quite a leap from what I have and I'm cautious of weather it will fit my ears well.

Flat head fan too. Although I believe I have only 3 at the moment.

VE Monk Plus(everybody should own a pair) Kbstellar(everybody should own a pair) Ry4s Plus(everyone should really own a pair of these)

My next pair are gonna be the snow lotus.

Can you tell me a bit about how they sound?

I remember seeing a video of ZReviews about them and he was gushing about how they sounded like the Moondrop Chaconne but much cheaper and I very much liked the sound of the Moondrop VX Classic but the fit for me is bad. It will fall out of my ears all the time.

I love them! For being a flathead they have some impressive dynamics, sound stage, and bass. Comes with a ton of accessories and the build of the buds are top notch. I use them with a ifi GO Blu but you can run them off anything easily. I just have the portable so why not use it.

I only have the ve monk and snow lotus. They sound virtually identical to me. I would l or the same form factor but with even more wow factor, what should I grab? I’m down to spend. They are so comfortable I end up using them a ton.

Can you tell me what are the differences between those? I really like my monk plus, but going from them to my iems I just notice how much top end they're missing, I'm looking for something much brighter than them but the absence of fr graphs for earbuds makes it very hard to know what to buy and to not just waste money getting 5 pairs at once to compare lol

Which one of these do you think that can compare or are even better than the salnotes zero in terms of sound and overall technicality?

I'm just expanding the choices I could buy when the time comes for my salnotes.

Well to my ears the main big difference is bass. However out of the 3, the kbear stellar are probably the brightest. And they're only like $3 or something.

Besides them, I've read the original Monks are bright. A pair I need to get.

Sorry I can't be of more help

Right now I’m really digging the Iris Ancestor. They are hitting the sweet spot with me.

I haven’t tried the Fiio but a pair of FF5 are actually on their way. The suggestions here and elsewhere pushed me over the edge. Can’t have too many right?

I have hours and hours on the monks. Really love them and they are kind of home for me. Notice no pads on them. Constantly wearing out and replacing, haha.

Aside from them the iris ancestors are in my ears constantly.

The shiro yuko are actually my least fav. Zero bass. Maybe something is wrong with them? Just very different from the rest.

The ve monk has had the most time in my ear but they were the first earbuds I got since owning my originals in the 90s. They feel like home to me.

Iris ancestor are current favorites.

Price can vary but for most between $5 and $20. But you know… you can spend $200 on some tgx earbuds.

Right now I have found my pair of RY4S, and I like them, but they do feel very much like kids percussion...

How do the new FiiO earbuds stack up? There's one for 129.99, and one for 99.99 both are metal construction.

No experience with those, sorry. I do have a pair of moondrop starfield’s and the experience with IEMs is just very different. Buds are a fun listening experience and have different fit you may enjoy, but your not going to get that extended bass without the seal IEMs provide.
