If you count the base of the trees as a color of green, I believe that's what he's considering black, since there's no actual black to be found.

It's the same color used for the trees, you can see it flowing into the rocks on the right side :D and some parts use a checker pattern with two similar colors to make it appear as one darker color. Used in the rocks and the far background trees.

There's a few "shades" of gray made by checkerboarding colors.
They do the darker gray with the black, as well as the darker gray and lighter gray
