Good for decorating. Not so good for skating. Rip on any plank for a week or 2 and there is barely anything left at the bottom hahahaa

Thanks! I didn’t keep track for this but I’d say 20+ hours. Brainstorming ideas takes like 5 hours, sketch takes probably 10-15, and then the marker part probably takes another 10

Back when North America was exclusively known as Turtle Island there were some people who loved to go out onto the rivers and test themselves in the fastest rapids they could find. Some of these people made beautiful paddle shaped art that never touched the water. Or so I have heard.

I love the style you have! the way the scenes flow and join together! The presentation of the final deck is nice too, the way the camera pans accross, revealing each new domain! The tiger was a suprise!

Thought: do a high resolution scan and then make full size decals from it! Then all the hungry skaters can have the best of both worlds and at a reasonable price! ...but I'd just love this piece on paper in a mat!

You could toss some risers on the trucks, good bearings and big soft wheels and use it as a transportation only deck. We used to do that to decks we liked the graphics of and called em big wheels. Like a hybrid longboard.

Somebody should invent a surface specifically for art. They could make it flat so its a lot easier to work with and hang, you could make it any size you want for your project and heck you could even put some nice frame around it. Museums would look a lot better without all those skateboards on the wall and the local kids would actually have something to use in their skate-parks.

There must be a batter way.....

The point is it's art and there doesn't have to be a point to art. Hanging painted skateboards on the wall as art pieces is not an uncommon thing anyway. The large flat surface is good to draw on, it's got a unique shape that looks different than a regular frame, and it has a distinct connection to a certain lifestyle that you might want to include in your art. They look nice on the wall.

Monochromatic art is attractive to many people on its own. I do a lot of ink-stipple projects, and a LOT of people say "you should add a splash of color!"

But those people don't have any interest in then buying that piece of art.

They just feel the need to push their own preferred aesthetic on the monochromatic piece- as if to imply the ink work is "missing" color.

It's not. The lack of color is the point.

There are people who do that style you are talking about, but if someone doesn't do it, it's an active choice. You're not recommending a novel idea. They've considered it, and rejected it already.

I've tried a similar project before, where the sharpies i was using melted the finish on the wood, causing all kinds of problems.

Did you start with a unfinished board? Amazing work.

>The point is it's art and there doesn't have to be a point to art

Without a point it isn't art, it's decoration.

If you want to decorate your house with an unused skateboard, go ahead. But all of those answers you gave above, those are choices that mean something. The idea that art doesn't have to have a point, is not it.

metaknight95 t1_isnz2mt wrote

I love seeing these but every time you know there is a 200% chance the person doesn’t know how to skate for shit (or will just hang it up)

I want to see someone doing nollie treflips on an awesome custom deck like that. Hanging it up is so boring - your deck SHOULD have battle scars all over it by the time you hang it up

struugi t1_iso1k8l wrote

Because it's not actually constructive, it's just saying "I would prefer if you made the art that I would have made instead of yours". It's entirely an aesthetic choice

Either you're not an artist or you don't understand/easily accept constructive feedback. It's how a real artist grows. It's possible to receive feedback you don't agree with, with grace and style. It's all part of honing your craft.

struugi t1_it6x0ir wrote

With all due respect, I am an artist and I do understand constructive feedback. I value constructive feedback immensely and it has helped me grow so much over the years. But I also believe that constructive feedback should only ever be given when solicited. Even though it can still be valid when unsolicited, it doesn't make it appropriate, and in the case of OP just wanting to share their work, it certainly isn't. It's like telling a coworker that their outfit isn't working for them. That may be valid and helpful, but even if put nicely it's still inappropriate.

That said, the "critique" given wasn't even valid. Like I said, it was an entirely aesthetic critique that wasn't based on anything technical. There's a difference between "The anatomy on the left arm is slightly off" and "I would have used watercolours instead of acrylics": one is based on good technique, and the other is purely preference. And it's generally safe to assume the artist isn't interested in brainstorming ideas with viewers.

Sorry for ranting, but I generally just dislike when people give unsolicited critique when the artist simply wants to share their work. It's just basic artist etiquette.
