The New Yorker and ProPublica did an excellent piece on how these stores impact lower-income communities, price out local mom & pop stores, create food deserts, and put their employees in serious harm’s way. https://www.propublica.org/article/how-dollar-stores-became-magnets-for-crime-and-killing/amp

The 99¢ Only stores in my area have some of the best produce in town. They also have a better selection of seasonal produce than the regular grocery stores.

I ran across some 99¢ Only stores in California a while back, I Love Them!
I cant wait for them to come to our area, but it look like it will be decades

Sounds like the mom and pop shops can't hang.

You’re correct, they can’t hang against economies of scale and corporations that don’t pay a living wage. Thus they close, and put a local business owner and their employees out of work. And while it would be great if they could hang, again, see their ability to compete against economies of scale and exploitation.

these dollar stores are predatory and basically suck all the money out left in places that have already been sucked dry by walmart.

This must be a very poor area.

Let's not pretend Wendy's is in the same shit tier as McDicks or BKing. I feel their standards are higher. Only thing worse is Arby's.

Arby’s is A tier, highest quality of the four. Then Wendy’s then BK then McDonalds

I'd say Arby's I'd like c tier for fast food. With McDonald's bring d and bk bring f

I would rate the meat in an Arby’s above that of Taco Bell. I seriously don’t know what is in their meat but it rips through me so badly that I avoid it like the plague.

The USDA policy book requires food labeled as "taco filling" to contain "at least 40 percent fresh meat." So, you're probably allergic or sensitive to whatever fillers (oat?) that Taco Bell fills their "meat" tacos with.

No one is pretending. At least corporate McDonald’s has to pay u $10/hr minimum. Wendys still workin high school kids until 12am for $7.25/hr

EmpathicCelt t1_jbu0zi7 wrote

In Ohio at least, the birthplace of Wendy's chain, starting is $9/hr, and back in 2020, all shift, sups, and managers were given 10% raises, not much, but it''s a start, which puts them about #3-4 on the pay chain around here, with oddly BK paying more!

dublea t1_jbwgz4a wrote

Depends 100% on location.

The McDonald's, BKs, and Wendy's near me are all complete dog shit. Only Arby's and fucking somehow Krystal's is solid.

Go an hour north and it's all reversed, LoL!

FD/DT just built one of their double-penetrating stores right across from a DoGen in Mountain City, TN recently, as well. Haha capitalism is crazy.

myleftone t1_jbsub6b wrote

Dollar General is actually a different business model. Originally meant to be a thrift chain in an era when a dollar could buy much more, their prices have grown well beyond the name. It can outcompete Walmart because of its smaller footprint and simpler supply logistics.

Plus brand loyalty is a thing. There are people who hate Walmart but love Dollar General, and the reverse. Dollar Tree/Family Dollar (itself more of a thrift store than its owner Dollar Tree) doesn’t offer the same appeal, to the same people. These aren’t actually direct competitors.

Still, in areas that can’t support a variety of business models, it’s depressing. It’s a guarantee there’s a shuttered downtown near these stores.
