It all depends on what you want from gaming.
Fortnite gives you a pure adrenaline rush, and quick success for one good action. And the blast of being lucky.
Minecraft gives you phases of meditative and relaxing actions like mining, logical problems to solve and feel the succes of, proudness about building something beautiful, adrenaline spikes in sticky situations, the happines of having a good idea, the endorphine rush of finding your first diamonds, etc.
It gives you more different kinds of reasons to be playing at the "cost" of a slower pace which isn't inherently bad either.
The reason MC is widely consudered better comes from the imense spread of player types.
Almost everyone has reasons to like it, even without the many ways to customize and modify the experience.
Minecraft is an overall better game due to the ability to mod the absolute donk out of it, if we're talking about vanilla, I can kinda understand tho. Fortnite's popularity has really only risen because of their brand deals, that's how they make all of their money.
Minecraft can tell any number of stories, be used by anyone, is only competitive when needed to be and isn't reliant on other players to be fun. Fortnite's story is only used to push more and more battle passes.
Servers are another thing that makes the game fun, the various game modes and incredible coding from the server owners make most servers one-of-a-kind, while Fortnite has what? Playground mode? Meh, got bored after an hour or so.
Minecraft has room for expansion and community content, while, to my knowledge, Fortnite does not.
