I had this discussion with a friend and, personally, I don't really care about graphics, but artstyle is probably one the most important features of a game imo. Gotta say that my friend haven't really agreed with me at all, he gives way more importance to graphics than I think he should.

It wouldn't matter for me as long it fits with their vision, maybe artstyle?

Artstyle. Itll be one of the first things i notice about a game. I had this same conversation with freinds the other day. If i take a screencap from cod, battlefield, and a few other modern titles and jumbled them up youd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Honestly I haven't cared much about graphics for like...15 years or so? At least not in terms of model detail, texture resolution, framerate and such. That was all more than good enough for me awhile back. Modern render distances are nice for open world stuff but most people aren't that targeted when they say "graphics"

Art Style.

You can take a 4k resolution photograph of a pile of shit but that doesn't make it appealing to look at.

Meanwhile..

To an extent the two are related, in that you obviously can't have a scene portraying dust or fog or godrays or colored lighting or so on if you don't actually have the graphical technology to make those things happen. But Art Style is by far the more important thing.

Artstyle makes even really low spec games look great. But a combination of the two is important, cause lighting is really important as well. The rest of graphics aren't so much

In my opinion, Artstyle. A game with a great artstyle holds up much better with time than one going for just good graphics. For example, I still think Curse of Monkey Island looks great, and that was released in 1997.

Good graphics will still be outdated one day. A good art style is timeless.

Borderlands is a prime example of art style alone can make a good game

Artstyle. A good artstyle can age so much better then generic realism.

Graphics are a placebo. These are no longer the days of chonkasaur polygons, improving graphical fidelity is purely masturbatory at this point and adds nothing of value to a game.

Art style is far more important than graphical fidelity, but gameplay is most important.

There was a great talk I can't remember the name of now, but the gist was "what do you do when graphical fidelity is 1:1 with reality? You still have to put something in the game for the players to do"

I prefer graphics, personally. A neat art style is cool, but I want to be blown away visually.

It depends. If it’s something like a military shooter I value graphics. If it is a platformer or RPG I think the art style is most important.

To each their own. If someone places more importance on graphical fidelity over art style, they can do that without being wrong. Some people just want games that feel real.

But I'd ask people if they'd play games with a very particular art style like Borderlands or Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (or a Super Mario Game). In the end, for me the most important aspect is the gameplay together with the story. Games can be hella ugly and still be tons of fun, but I wouldn't play the prettiest game for more than an hour or two if it was just unfun.

runescape is a fantastic example of how graphics aren't everything.

Art style. The wrong at style can entirely put me off a game. (IE cartoonifying a sequel to a series I liked)

Artstyle all the way there isn't even debate, Dishonored still looks beautiful, Cuphead will always look good, same for Ori etc etc.

Art style, this is why Elden Ring looks fantastic the graphics are good but the art style is what makes it

Artstyle %100. I think great graphics are just there to elevate the artstyle even more.
