Believe me, it's not "underrated". It got tons of high praise at release, people couldn't stop saying enough good things about it, that's the literal opposite of underrated.

If anything, it was overrated. Not to say that it was bad, but it got more praise than it was due because it was literally the ONLY real PS5 exclusive outside of Demon's Souls for a good long time. It was a solid 7 or 8 (depending on your tolerance for roguelike gameplay) and people were calling it a 10/10.

great game, that 5th biome though...

I don't even think it's that niche. Returnal sold more than 500,000 units despite launching as a PS5 exclusive at a time when it was impossible to buy PS5s. It's not Elden Ring or COD of course, but more than half a million units without being backwards compatible is definitely nothing to sneeze at.

LuckyPerro123 t1_ja81fiv wrote

HONESTLY. When I first played the game, I actually gave up on it for a while because of the fifth biome. Interestingly enough though, When I came back eventually, I got through it on like my second try. Thankfully the devs knew not to put a boss in that biome

I really liked it, then got on a several hour run where I got towards the end of the game before dying, and never want to touch it again. There just isn't enough progression between deaths imo.

If it had similar mechanics without being a Roguelike I think I would have liked it a lot more.

I love to play it coop. My main problem with it is that the loot is kinda basic and a low amount of it. I wish it had more interesting things. Love the setting and the gameplay but I think the loot hurts the game. Also the low amount of weapons.

I wasn't a fan of the difficulty scaling. Bosses were too easy, killed them all on the first time fighting them. Mini-bosses can be bullshit. Had one spawn in a tiny room that would constantly spawn rings of energy where there was basically no where in the room you could stand and not take dmg.

It's weird - on one hand, it was really well received, so we'll received that Sony was willing to buy Housemarque.

But at the same time, the "gaming buzz" seems to.....not be there? The only reason I learnt it released on the PC was because somebody made a post about how silent the PC release was. Usually, when a hyped game comes out, you'd expect to see at least a couple of "guys, look at me play this" posts on something like the Steamdeck sub, but I've not seen that much buzz with Returnal, when comparing it against its critical acclaim, so...weird.

1

LoSouLibra t1_ja8nyl3 wrote

Yeah, and a lot of PS5's there were out there weren't even in the hands of people who actually wanted to buy and play games on them. They were in the hands of scalpers. And after some people dropped their $1000 out of desperation to get one, they had barely any money left to buy games with.

A lot of launch and first year games probably got hammered sales-wise. Read a lot of articles about how most PS5's were in the hands of scalpers instead of customers who would have purchased at least 2 or 3 games. Then, people who dropped $1000 or more on ebay probably couldn't afford more than 1 game for quite awhile.

Underrated refers to ratings or the general opinion of something.

The game (PS5) has a 86% critic score on Meta right now. That's fair. Although the users score PS5/PC is at like 7.5 and 6.5. So that is kind of 'underrated'. Not sure why thats so low there. Did it get bombed or something?

Underappreciated, maybe.

I think the difficulty is more tied to your RNG for artifacts and such. I think i had 3 or 4 deaths first time i started it on first biome, the breezes through all 3 in one go when the drops was in my favour. Then same happened on 4th, then breezed through all 3 in one go when i got good stuff again.

I think im just at the point where need more than just combat out of a game. i want character creation, i want that character to live in the world, i want to do a ton of non-combat stuff. I still enjoy narrative stuff, but when I'm looking at these games, i can't justify spending so much money on them...

like looking at Skyrim and Oblivion and GTA etc, those games are worth their weight in gold. But then I look at other games and just think...why would I pay the same price for such games. I get less things to do, less content, bleh.

I'm sure this game is great for people who like this sort of thing, but when i see it, i just see "pay $70 to frustrate yourself"

Using the actual definition you could easily make the argument that the game was undervalued and underestimated by the average gamer. "Rated" isn't just referring to people who get paid to critique.

I think the Fast and Furious movies are overrated as fuck and they make shitloads of money in spite of having terrible reviews

Anecdotally, a lot of people really hated it because they had no experience with roguelites before and didn't like the starting from the beginning after you die aspect of it. There was also quite a bit of hate because you couldn't save mid run and come back to it the next day, also pretty common in rogue games but not really mainstream.

As for the roguelite aspects of it they are lite, the powerups that you loot are pretty basic stat boosts that don't really change up how you play all the much, that being said it was a solid game with 10/10 sound and visual design and I'm excited at the prospect of a Returnal 2 or a spiritual successor.

Edit

From a personal viewpoint I'd also have loved a "loop" mechanic where you start from the beginning after killing the last boss in an NG+ sort of sense.
