Hi /r/gaming

My GF, in her mid 30's, wants to get into gaming. I'm obviously completely out of touch as my Atari collection is full of ants (see: Ants built a nest in my Atari game collection :()

She loves sci-fi, adventures, aliens, hidden secret stuff, and I think she'd love it it had a real social aspect, like a real community with real people playing together etc.

Please any suggestions and ask any questions!

PC gaming would be something I'd suggest. The Steam catalog is pretty incredible giving you tons of options for the interests you listed.

You can build your own PC gaming rig (get more bang for your buck but it takes patience learning to build it correctly) or you can buy a pre built gaming PC depending on your budget of course for both options. If you want something streamlined then get a PS5.

  • Mass effect should be at the top of your list.
  • half life 2
  • quantum break
  • horizon zero dawn
  • portal
  • Detroit become human

I'll add more later but this is a good start in opinion.

I'd be inclined to recommend an Xbox Series S or Series X for the exclusives Starfield, Quantum Break, Shadow Complex, the Halo series, and the Gears of War series. Other great sci-fi games available for Xbox (and other platforms) include The Outer Worlds, Prey (2017), Outer Wilds, No Man's Sky, Alien: Isolation, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the XCom series, the Deus Ex series, the Bioshock series, Surviving Mars, Deliver Us The Moon, Deliver Us Mars, the Fallout series, the Dead Space series, Cyberpunk 2077, the Portal series, and many others. Note a number of these games are currently available on the Game Pass Ultimate subscription service for Xbox as well.

If she likes sci fi but more cute stuff then Ratchet and Clank, Psychonauts 2, Star Ocean.

There are so many sci fi games out there that it's hard to know what she would enjoy. Do you know any other specifics?

A lot of games are cross platform so choice be more on particular exclusives if any.

Fallout 76 just started a new season and the player base is very welcoming in my experience.

If she's a Star Wars fan Star War the Old Republic is an MMO that may be worth looking into since you mention wanting a social aspect.
