So, no touchscreens still? They really don't want their iPad sales to slump.

I've only seen people with touchscreen laptops because I recognized them as such, not because they were used as such. I don't know anyone that touches a screen unless they have to.

Because they’re okay with producing shit products that have no justification to exist. It’s just marketing bs to charge for a feature (or more often make up for missing ones) by throwing a cheap touchscreen panel on

People have been saying that about growing cell phone sizes. "This phone is huge. It can't possibly get any bigger, no one would want it". Then someone comes out with a larger phone and it sells better than the last largest phone.

> Discounting you own personal feelings - they're popular.

Companies offering it as an option doesn't really say anything about popularity just ease of production.

I had a touchscreen laptop. It's pretty much just a gimmick IMO.

It definitely says nothing about its popularity. What does say something about it is that no one I've ever met with a touchscreen laptop has ever said anything positive about the touchscreen.

Yeah they really did. I have the release M1 and I have no reason to upgrade. It's nice that Ryujinx runs natively now and they're becoming really potent switch emulators but other than that I don't do anything that warrants a more powerful macbook yet.

Obviously if you're in the market for a laptop already this is probably nice for you but there's no reason to upgrade from M1 to M2 for most people.

CptnCumQuats t1_j4r13qt wrote

I’m just happy they keep upgrading so I can eventually get an m1 MacBook Pro for cheaper than the $900 I saw it on for a bit.

Kind of like the iPhone SE, they gotta make a MacBook Pro SE with the m1 chip and sell it forever.

But bring back MagSafe and USB c.

When is it not "more game-changing performance and the longest battery life ever in a Mac" like really? Name a MacBook that was worse than it's previous generation. I hate posts like these.

The 2020 MacBook Air had a 20-hour battery life, quite a bit longer than everything else. The pros generally have sacrificed battery life for performance.

Having a touch screen on a laptop is annoying compared to a touch screen on a iPad or iPhone. It’s not it’s intended design and i remember one time a fly landed on my screen and moved my cursor. Lol it was weird.

can i wait till this thing literally dies or is the m2 platform significant enough to merit a upgrade ?

i only do basic coding/photo editing and watch netflix occasionally

My Samsung laptop is a 2 in 1 so I can flip it over and take notes with a pen or flip it back and type. It's really useful for school.

Many artists like the ability to draw on the machine they edit on. I know a few who stay with Windows laptops for that reason.

I also know a lot of older people who like having the option to use a touchscreen for daily use but still like having an attached keyboard and desktop OS apps.

I'm actually surprised they still haven't released a touchscreen MacBook Air 2 in 1 that would meet the first and third groups' needs.

all M1 and M2 chips are brain-meltingly fast. you literally cannot go wrong with a new Mac, it's insane. you can complain about them being expensive, but they are simply on another level in terms of power AND efficiency.

The real MVP is the new mac mini with the M2 Pro costing 499, but that will be faster than the previous MacPro with M1 Max. It's ridiculous.

You are thinking of the 2020 M1 13" Macbook Pro which Apple has marketed as "up to 20 hour" battery life, the very similar M1 Air has a smaller battery and "up to 18 hour" battery life.

I like using macs for literally everything other than gaming, because sadly, it just isn’t for that.

I believe that if Apple was able to push focus on making their computers able to play games well, they could create some hard competition in the PC gaming market

It does. We just endured a decade of Intel gaslighting people about what is possible and what is not, while at the same time, hampering progress through monopolistic practices. I'm just glad Apple is willing to break from that and start innovating again because they're tired of Intel's bullshit.

The hardware is already decent. The problem is the install base isn’t large so no one wants to develop games for it. So no one buys it for gaming, which keeps the install base small.

Plus this internal 256gb ssd is wayyyyyyyyyyyy too small and last I checked it just wasn't worth paying for the 512. I basically live off of my external drives

M2 is only optimization of M1 design.

M3 will be a true upgrade and should bring the big gun lift in performance.

M2 is for those looking to get into M series for first time, M3 will give M1 users a reason to upgrade.

When the M1 MBPs came out, one of the lead engineers at Twitter said that the improvement in compilation time for their developer’s was so impressive that the saved time would pay for the cost of the machines in less than 6 months in increased productivity. Compilation benefits massively from fast IO, particularly when you’re compiling locally with optimisations off to improve build times, and the disk and memory bandwidth improvement over the Intel machines is huge. Apple claim the new M2 MBPs compile Xcode projects 2.5x faster than the last Intel machines.
