i own and use the final intel MBP Apple manufactured
can i wait till this thing literally dies or is the m2 platform significant enough to merit a upgrade ?
i only do basic coding/photo editing and watch netflix occasionally

I mean unless your current machine is costing you time on the job (aka money) than there’s no need to upgrade.

bet - will check again 5 years from now 👍🏽

I’m in the same boat as you btw. Doing software development on an Intel MBP. Right now my skills are the bottleneck, not the machine. Maybe that will change in the future.

Am I allowed in the boat with my 2013 MBP that has been destroyed by software updates, making it almost unusable.

would it be correct to assume having a intel MBP is good for dev because of software compatibility?
the only coding i've started is in python & golang but it's for a cybersecurity project im exploring
savage_slurpie t1_j4sifbe wrote
I really don’t think it matters for most devs. Most of my coworkers are using M1 machines and I haven’t heard of any issues from them.

Bet?

It’s slang for affirmation or agreement. Like “for sure”, “okay”, “got it”.

all M1 and M2 chips are brain-meltingly fast. you literally cannot go wrong with a new Mac, it's insane. you can complain about them being expensive, but they are simply on another level in terms of power AND efficiency.

I went from an Intel 16” to an M1 13”. The battery life and lower heat output are amazing.

When the M1 MBPs came out, one of the lead engineers at Twitter said that the improvement in compilation time for their developer’s was so impressive that the saved time would pay for the cost of the machines in less than 6 months in increased productivity. Compilation benefits massively from fast IO, particularly when you’re compiling locally with optimisations off to improve build times, and the disk and memory bandwidth improvement over the Intel machines is huge. Apple claim the new M2 MBPs compile Xcode projects 2.5x faster than the last Intel machines.
