We had one for our kids who really liked it. The controls started having problems right after meta bought oculus, it was unplayable after we owned it for just over a year when the shit warranty expired. We could not buy a new controller anywhere. Meta quit supporting it immediately, you could not buy parts or get service. You could buy a used controller on eBay for around $150 dollars at the time, and then just hope the same thing did not happen. We got a raw deal on that thing.

It's pretty crappy that they stopped producing replacement hardware just a little over a year after it came out. As for the part about discontinuing updates, I think I prefer that. The alternative is that they keep pushing features made for the OQ2 until the OQ1 can no longer run the games that worked three years ago.

VR is not recommended for children under 13yrs. Especially with a lot of the interactions in VR lobbies, I'd say it's questionable to allow children under 16yrs to use. Ultimately, it's up to the parents though.

Exactly my point. Screaming kids yelling obscene and racist comments in the ears of other impressionable children. It's not hard to see how this would be a problem. Again, it's ultimately up to the parents to do their own research and make their own decisions regarding their own children.

Update: I received the replacement headset...it's cosmetically damaged, doesn't work, and they didn't include the hardware for the headset that rests against your face, so it's unusable. Skyrim just like any other PC game you definitely need to mod for it to feel like an actual VR experience. If you play half life Alex, it will ruin all other VR experiences for you. There is a game called the grim Lord that is coming out and it will be a souls like experience. And there is a game called contractors on quest, two standalone and PC that will allow you to play halo call of duty and many other Mabs from the late 90s and early 2000s. And another shooter is called Pavlov. This will let you play call of duty zombies and some other game modes as well. Also, it has all of the maps from 007 goldeneye which is pretty cool. All these maps are modded and re-created by the community.

That headset poisoned the well of VR (as most Facebook/Oculus things did), by making people think VR was accessible and enjoyable untethered--not just wireless, but no PC.

Untethered is accessible, it's not long term enjoyable. Tethered VR is the opposite. It's long term enjoyable but not accessible. A major problem continues to be the amount of available content, as the comfort problem is rapidly improving with the Index and newer HTC headsets.

I would compare it to owning an early EV. They were expensive, not great, and not feasible for longer trips because charging wasn't there. Nobody wanted to build chargers or faster charging because people didn't want to buy EVs that couldn't go anywhere and took forever to charge, and because people didn't want to buy them they weren't building chargers or making improvements to charging/batteries. It's the same story with VR and VR Content.

It's not that VR isn't reaching the realm of being great the same way EVs were years back--it's that people don't want to buy them because there isn't enough to do on them. There has to be a threshold soon where either untethered VR actually gets great--which I doubt happens in the next 5 or maybe even 10 years--or wireless, PC VR is cheap and accessible enough that people are willing to get a PC to go with it.

That type of advance is what eventually got EVs the infrastructure they needed. The hardware has to advance before the content, but it's good enough now to not be a gimmick. Good enough to be a smart purchase for gamers is another question, unless you're into Sim.

The iPhone 6S was discontinued in 2018 and Apple just stopped new OS support for it this year (it can’t get iOS 16). That’s the most recently discontinued model under their new policy and…. is 5 years.

Their other devices tend to be supported longer since there really isn’t much reason for them to stop OS updates for a laptop or streaming box, etc. But we were taking quickly evolving mobile devices here.

Anyway - they entire modern VR industry is less than 8 years old. IMO until it’s more mature 5 years isn’t bad.
