Why? I mean, there have been unofficial bundles that include a second controller. But why would this come from Sony? I'd feel like most PS5 owners would rather have a special second controller that isn't the standard white. What games would even require two controllers?

? Battery life isn’t very good but the controller itself is incredible. Most everybody who plays it or reviews the ps5 mentions that the controller is one of the most “next-gen” things about the experience.

Yup. I used to buy everything on Xbox because I preferred my Elite controller. Now I buy nearly everything on PS because the haptics on the controller are SO GOOD. The Xbox is basically just a game pass appliance for me now.

I agree here. Personally I love the purple one, but I of course got a white one with the ps5 and got the GoW one. Having a second one is nice so I can hot swap if the battery is low. However, I feel like I'm shut out of even considering getting that purple one. I mean, if it's hard to justify a second, why would I ever think of getting a third?!

Personally I wish instead of these two controller versions they'd have a no controller version with either a voucher for one at the same price or for $50+ cheaper.

Who the fuck said it’s horrid? I’ve used a bunch of current gen gaming devices this past year and it’s probably the best controller out right now. It’s in my top two current gen gaming items right behind the steam deck.

Completely not on topic but I fucking hate how the gaming industry successfully made it almost a requirement that it's 1 person per console if you want to game with friends or family.

Have two kids that are heavy gamers that want to play games with each other? Two PS5s.

As someone else pointed out to me, fighting games (like Street Fighter) and sports games (like Madden and FIFA) still have local multiplayer. But that is a far cry from the olden days of local couch multiplayer or co-op. And none of these are split-screen.

It's really too bad, because those kinds of games were a ton of fun. I wonder if they will see a resurgence at some point in the future? Seems like something someone might tap into at some point and people go crazy for it in some way that results in a few fairly high profile games in a relitively short period of time.

Gotta agree that I’m ALWAYS on the market for a good split screen/two player co-op game. Wife and I just bought a PS5 and bought Sackboy for $15 at Walmart. So much fun! Sadly we’re struggling to find other good co-op games to play together…

Nice. When the 1st one's stick starts drifting after a few months, you can just swap to the other one.

Suggestion: When i was younger I played a little bit of a game with my brother called “Tale of Two Brothers”. Both characters are controlled with one half of the controller; the older brother is completely controlled with the right stick, buttons, and right triggers and the younger the left stick, directional pad, and left triggers. We ended up holding the controller between us while playing the game each with one hand. I’ve been thinking about getting it for me and my partner because I never finished it!

This is only my experience, but I can game for like 6+ hours with the PS5 controller without any issue. I don't pay that much attention, but I was playing GoW Ragnarok like 10 hours a day and aside from like an hour of charging while I ate some food, my controller never died.

Smokeydubbs t1_j3oqv08 wrote

obliviousjd t1_j3or5ao wrote

Honestly the best part of the Xbox controller is that it uses AA batteries.

If it dies, I can just swap my rechargeable AAs with the ones on my charger. And if the batteries deteriorate over time I can get replacements for cheap because of how ubiquitous AA are, it's a nice little right to repair feature.

Meanwhile, my PS controllers might as well be wired.

I couldn't believe I had to purchase the GoW controller separately after opening the bundle and realizing it came with the basic white. Everyone has to milk us for every little detail, feature or variation of their products these days.

Trenchfun t1_j3p3qna wrote

Not only is the battery life worse, but the controllers have a major stick drift issue, I’ve been through 3 over the course of a year.

Jnoper t1_j3ph2lw wrote

Why is everyone complaining about the ps5 controllers? I’ve had mine for over a year and I haven’t had a single issue. I’m pretty sure I’ve never even seen low battery. How long do people play without charging their controllers?

1

lionheart4life t1_j3pk64k wrote

It seems worse. But I also have a couple controllers and keep two on the charge cradle all the time.

Honestly it feels like the battery is always warning that it is low but can keep going for hours like that often. So maybe they really aren't too bad.

I was basically forced to buy a two controller bundle when I found my PS5 at GameStop a while back.

I haven’t even taken the original white controller out of its box and I’ll just save it.

Was mildly salty I was forced into the second controller for no reason but at least it’s a cool red one 😆

With all due respect, they're not doing anything unethical. If you're willing to pay for exactly the same product functionally with some aesthetic changes, it makes total sense to charge you for it.

You're willing to pay for every little detail and variation.

You don't have to purchase it. Just use a normal controller.

−3

garlicluv t1_j3qn2jj wrote

>I'd feel like most PS5 owners would rather have a special second controller

Nah, most people don't care about that. Most people would welcome two controllers in their bundle.

Most gamers aren't as obsessed as the ones on reddit.

Smokemonster421 t1_j3qpjab wrote

You missed the point. I was disappointed that my GoW bundle came with a normal controller when, in the past, the featured controller has been included with the bundle. I was going to buy a second controller anyway.

Never said they're being unethical. And of course a business has the goal of profit. Just stinks that every company has adapted this habit of charging extra for every little detail they can.

garlicluv t1_j3qqj8v wrote

My bad, looks like I did.

Still though, we all live in a global economy predicated and hinged on year on year growth, we're just living downstream from that.

Dangerous-Charity-47 t1_j3qrdbh wrote

I don't game often but when I do, I play 10+ hours. In that time I have to switch controller after about 5 - 6 hours. Depends on the game and how many features of the new PS5 controllers they are using. IMO batteries in PS5 controllers don't last as long as batteries in PS4 controllers.

So there, one controller is not enough for me.

Chronotaru t1_j3qsjug wrote

Stick drift problems like the whole industry still has had forever, and weak springs in the triggers on earlier controllers. Besides that they're okay, although I personally would prefer replaceable batteries that can charge separately in a cradle. like the Xbox ones.

Drogdar t1_j3qspej wrote

We have a "charging dock" and always have one or two controllers charging... the main reason we have multiple is because of the shit battery life.

We have one PS3 controller that gets VERY occasional use as a streaming device and we charge it like twice a year. When covid was in full swing I replayed Red Dead 1 and it lasted about 3 days with constant use before needing to be charged. And it weighs less than the PS4 controller...

ColoursRock t1_j3qviji wrote

That's a nice idea, but maybe encourage some developers to make games couch co-op instead of 1-4 Network Players. I'm so sick of multiplayer being nearly exclusive to players with two consoles.

The older one only wants to play co-op because he generally doesn't like to lose. The younger one only wants to play competitive because he likes to kick ass. It's tough finding something they both want to play. Between the NES emulator (Raspberry Pi) and the PS3 (Ragdoll Kung Fu, LBP Karting) they have some good choices, but the PS4 options have been slimmer. Basically they play It Takes Two, Minecraft, Quake, and a shitload of Brawlhalla.

That's bad luck. They aren't the most durable, but they shouldn't be dying like that. For reference, it's the same hardware as the PS4, Xbox and switch pro controllers (default controllers, not stuff like the Xbox elite controller)

So did the OG controller drift within like a year or something? I'm only asking so I can gauge mine out of curiosity. I've had these 2 DualSenses for about 6 months now and I'm gonna see how far it goes.

I've always been skeptical of peoples anecdotes about drift sometimes because as long as we're not talking about joycons I feel like it comes down to usage only because the last time I got drift was on my dualshock 4 that I left to gather dust and even then that took 3 years to start drifting. started buying controller pouches ever since.

Regardless, I do believe that as long as you're not bashing the controller against a wall It shouldn't drift due to prolonged use but wear and tear is also a thing so I don't really know where to stand here.
